Overview
This 14-day long Lower Dolpo Trekking starts from Dunai. Alongside the Bheri and Barbung River, the trail passes through the pine forest and terraced field to Shar Tara. The next day, you cross several streams, including Tara Khola and Tarap Chu, to reach Laina Odar. In the upcoming days, you walk past the isolated villages and deep gorges to reach Dho Tarap.
As you climb close to Numa-La pass, the trek becomes challenging. At the altitude of 5310 meters, the Numa-La pass is the highest point of the trek. After crossing Baga-La pass, the trail descends gradually to Yak Kharka and Ringmo towards the pristine Lake of Shey Phoksundo. Enjoying the unique charm and unsurpassed beauty of the Dolpo area, you return along the familiar trail to Juphal.
This trek goes through challenging and rough trails, high and narrow paths, and mountains pass. The challenging topography requires you to obtain a special trekking permit and a national park entry permit. You will stay at lodges and tented camps with basic facilities. Spring and autumn seasons are the best time to explore the Dolpo region.

After breakfast, you’ll head to the domestic terminal of Tribhuvan International Airport and take a 45-minutes long flight to Nepalgunj. Nepalgunj is a thriving city in western Nepal near the southern border. This city is a conglomeration of people from diverse cultures and religions, especially the Hindus and the Muslims. Visit the famous Bageshwori temple, Rani Tal (pond), and walk around the city to enjoy street foods.

Today you’ll take a 35-minute long scenic flight from Nepalgunj to Jhuphal. After landing in Jhuphal Airport, our crew members will receive you. They will help you with your luggage, and you’ll drive to Dunai, the district headquarters of Dolpa. The 2-hour drive will take you to the beautiful town on the bank of the Thuli Bheri at an elevation of 2140 meters.

Today, you’ll walk upstream along the Bheri and Barbung River. This fine trail takes you through pine forests and deep gorges until you reach the terraced field of Tarakot (Shar Tara). Tarakot is an old fortress and was also the capital of a princely state before the unification of Nepal. This small village is set on a hillock south to the Bheri River.

Starting your trek along the southern bank of the Bheri River, you’ll trek your way to Bharbung Khola (stream). After crossing the Bharbung Khola, you’ll head north-east along the Tarap Khola and reach Khanigaon. From Khanigaon, you can enjoy the beautiful view of famous Sandul Gompa (Monastery) at the confluence of Barbung and Tarap Chu Khola. You’ll continue your trek to Laina Odar for an overnight stay.

The trail continues along the Tarap Khola. Today, you’ll have some adventurous walk through the narrow gorges and steep slopes as you cross several wooden bridges. A cautious walk along the narrow wooden bridges will be a spine-tingling experience. The trail takes you through Chhyugar, Nawarpani, and finally, you’ll stop at Toltol for an overnight stay. Toltol is a winter settlement for the people of the Upper Dolpo region. People migrate here in winter from the Upper Dolpo region to escape the harsh winter.

Along the meandering Tara Khola, you’ll continue the uphill trek enjoying the beautiful landscapes and tranquil environment of the Dolpo region. As you climb higher, you’ll notice a gradual variation in vegetation. The taller trees gradually disappear, and wild rose bushes and juniper come into sight. You’ll walk past Kamattarka, where Tarap Chu and Lang Khola converge to continue as a single body of water. After walking for five hours, you’ll reach Dho-Tarap, a famous trade point for the ancient traders of Mustang and Tibet. The houses are small, made up of stones, and the whole village is surrounded by a stone wall.

It is an acclimatization day to adapt yourself to the altitude and climate of this region. Today, you’ll spend some quality time in this beautiful village interacting with people and learning about their customs, culture, and tradition. This village is inhabited by the people of Bon-Po and Nyingma tradition. They wear typical homespun clothing and Tibetan-styled boots with upturned toes called Docha. You’ll also visit the Bon monasteries around the village.

After a day of acclimatization, you’ll continue your trek along the Tarap Chu Khola that leads your way up to Tarap valley. The Tarap valley looks majestic with its green patches of fertile agricultural land, where farmers grow buckwheat, barley, and potato. The beautiful monasteries decorated with colorful flags make the view even more fantastic. From there, you’ll continue to the traditional village of Tokyu, cross a suspension bridge, walk along the stony track, and finally stop at Numa La Base camp. Overnight stay at Numa-La Base Camp.

Today, you’ll have a challenging trek along the rugged trail with ridges and steep slopes to Numa-La pass, the highest point of this trek at 5310 m. However, this demanding trek is worthwhile as it rewards you with the astounding views of Mt. Dhaulagiri, Mt. Churen, and Mt. Norbung from Numa-La pass. After spending some time at the pass, you’ll descend to Gyambo Khola and keep moving along the green pastures of Danigar, admiring the beautiful scenery. Today, you will cross another pass in the area, the Baga-La pass at an elevation of 5170 m. The ascending trail is strenuous, but you’ll be fascinated by the picturesque landscape, tranquil atmosphere of the area, and magnificent view of Mt Norbung, Mt. Kanjirowa, and a distant view of Phoksundo Lake. From Baga-La pass, you’ll descend to cross a frozen stream at Temche. The descending trail continues to Yak Kharka, where you’ll stop for your overnight stay.

Finally, you’ll ascend to Ringmo village. A short walk from the village will mesmerize you with the beauty of the awe-inspiring Phoksundo Lake. This Y-shaped lake is the deepest lake of Nepal and one of the most beautiful lakes in the world that spellbinds you with its breathtaking view and blue emerald water body.

After breakfast, you’ll follow the trail to Chhepka via Chunuwar and Rechi. You’ll walk mostly downhill with an occasional uphill hike along the rocky trail and forested hills. As usual, the pristine environment and beautiful landscape will keep you fascinated. The caravan of yaks loaded with heavy sacks are spectacular to watch. Finally, you will stop at Chhepka for an overnight stay. There are a few shops and a teahouse lodges in this place for accommodation.

Today, you’ll leave Chhepka for Jhuphal. First, you’ll trek down to Shyanta crossing Sulighat, which leads you along the forested paths of Shey Phoksundo National Park. Then, you’ll walk past the village of Kageni. While walking through these Tibetan-styled traditional villages, you’ll get some glimpses of the rural lifestyle in the Dolpo region. From Kageni, you’ll continue your trek to Dunai. Finally, you’ll reach Jhuphal, the endpoint of your two-week-long trekking. Overnight stay at Jhuphal.

After breakfast, you’ll take a thirty five-minutes long scenic flight from Jhuphal to Ranjha Airport, Nepalgunj. A connection flight from Nepalgunj will fly you back to Kathmandu. Our staff will transfer you to the hotel. You may need some rest after many days of trekking.

Best time to visit the trek
The best time to visit the trek is during Spring and Autumn seasons. Similarly, this season provides you with an ideal climate. Similarly, the weather is stable and you can climb with clear visibility. However, this climbing can also be done in the monsoon season too. Make sure you fully enjoy yourself.
The difficulty of the trek
This trek is a 14-day long trek. Similarly, this trek is also difficult. You have to do a lot of uphill climbs during this trek. You will travel from some suspension bridges and rough roads. Similarly, you might fall victim to altitude sickness.

In this 14 day long trek your life is always at risk. So, for trekking in Lower Dolpo, it is compulsory to have travel insurance with you. Make sure your risks regarding the trek are covered. Similarly, make sure that all the hospital bills can be covered by the insurance company.

Fitness and experience
Lower Dolpo Trek is a very long trek. So, you must be mentally and physically fit for this trek. Therefore, If you have some health issues like asthma, blood diseases, etc. then we are afraid that you cannot be a part of this journey. Also, rookie trekkers cannot be part of this trek as well.
