The 23-days Upper Dolpo Trekking begins at Kathmandu City. Embark on a scenic 50-minute flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, followed by a short trans-Himalayan flight to Juphal in Dolpa District. Upon arrival, you’ll drive to Dunai and then embark on the scenic trek into Upper Dolpo Region. The trail gradually advances into Shey Phoksundo National Park and goes past numerous Tibetan-styled settlements before arriving at Phoksundo Lake (3738m).

The trail advances along the pristine Phoksundo Khola towards Shey Gompa (4126m), the spiritual heart of Dolpo at the base of Crystal Mountain. Then, you pass by Jeng La Pass (4850m), from where you can witness the magnificent sights of Dhaulagiri (8167m) and Kanjirowa Himal (6883m) in the distance. After crossing numerous high-altitude regions, you’ll begin descending through Dho Tarap, Serkam, Khanigaon, and Tarakot back to Dunai.

Followed by a short drive to Juphal, you’ll catch a connecting from Nepalgunj back to Kathmandu. Being a rain-shadow area, you can access Upper Dolpo throughout the year. The months of Mar-Jun and Sep-Nov remain two best times to undertake this trek.

Enjoy a delicious breakfast. Afterward, you’ll drive to Tribhuvan International Airport and embark on a domestic flight. The 50-minutes flight takes you to the far-western city of Nepalgunj. Enjoy a scenic tour of the beautiful Himalayas and deep ravines in western Nepal. Nepalgunj is a bustling city located in the southern region of Nepal. A hot and humid place, you can find shelter in some of the most popular tourist landmarks around the city. You can choose to visit the local zoo, botanical garden, and the local market. After a delicious breakfast, you’ll drive to the airport and embark on a beautiful trans-Himalayan flight to Juphal town. A short flight takes off from Terai and climbs past lush hills and Himalayas into the trans-Himalayan region of Dolpo. Juphal in Dolpa District remains accessible only by air or a foot journey.  Upon arrival, you’ll embark on a local commute and begin driving north towards Dunai Town. The 2-hour long scenic road journey goes through rugged and dusty road alongside the massive Bheri River. Overnight in Dunai.

Trek to Ankhe

Dunai Town serves as the headquarters of Dolpa District. Leaving Dunai, you’ll commence the first day of the trek. Begin climbing upstream along the Bheri River. Cross a suspension bridge and walk past a local hospital to enter Thulo Bheri valley. The trail continues along the ridge at 2499m overlooking the beautiful view of Kagmara Peak. Walk past walnut groves at Dhera and cross numerous cattle sheds towards Rahagaun, a Thakuri village. Continue walking past canyon and deep ravines towards Ankhe. Overnight in Ankhe.

Leaving Ankhe village, the trail climbs almost 444 meters in altitude to reach Renje village. Renje lies at 3104 meters inside Phoksundo Khola Valley. You may have to cross numerous suspension bridges over the Thulo Bheri River and trek through rugged and exposed ridges. Upon arrival in Phoksundo River Valley, you’ll continue trekking uphill towards Renje. Overnight in Renje.

Leaving Renje, the trail begins to climb along the Pungmo River. The narrow trail goes past the beautiful cedar forests. A short hike brings you to Palma village. A steep ascent through dense Cedar forests brings you to Ringmo village, where you can enjoy your lunch. After lunch, you’ll continue with your trek and begin advancing towards the pristine destination of Shey Phoksundo Lake. The beautiful Phoksundo Lake is oligotrophic, alpine freshwater lake. Also known as the deepest lake in Nepal, Phoksundo supports the local ecosystem. You may witness high-ridges and dense forests around the lake. Spend the rest of the day relaxing inside your tent. Overnight at Phoksundo Lake.

Today, you’ll explore the beautiful lake and the surrounding areas. Embark on a short hike to the charming village of Ringmo, where you’ll get to witness the ancient Tibetan-Buddhist Monastery. The hundreds of years old Monastery boast rich architecture influence by Tibetan monasteries. You’ll also get the chance to witness the local customs, culture, and lifestyle. Locals in the village depend on animal rearing, farming, and preparing handicrafts. You’ll retrace your path and head back to the lake, where you can start exploring the surrounding Buddhist Chortens. Overnight at Phoksundo Lake.

Enjoy your breakfast, and then embark on an uphill trek to your next destination. The trail leaves Phoksundo Lake and begins climbing towards the contours on a rocky ledge. Catch the last of Phoksundo Lake as you begin climbing through the remote terrain. The rigorous climb takes you at the westernmost edge of the lake and goes through a lush meadow. The trail gradually advances towards the Phoksundo Khola or Phoksundo River. A short hike along the river brings you to the campsite. Overnight in Phoksundo Khola.

Leaving Phoksundo Khola, you’ll begin climbing for few hours along the trail en route to a glacial valley. The trail turns north towards the confluence of Phoksundo Khola and another massive river. Cross the old wooden bridge and continue walking north-east through the sheep meadow. You’ll climb into a deep ravine and cross into another valley overlooking the beautiful Kang La pass. Today, you’ll camp just at Phoksundo Bhanjyang overlooking the beautiful Chamlang Peak (6739m) and Peak 7 (6105m). Overnight in Phoksundo Bhanjyang.

Leaving Phoksundo Bhanjyang, you’ll continue along the remote trail towards the fabled Shey Gompa located at the base of Crystal Mountain. The local quartz-like peak remains the most sacred peak for Dolpalis. The locals refer to it as the Kailash. The trail climbs through the slated path towards the high pass of Kang La. Catch the magnificent view of snow-capped peaks of Shey Shikhar and Kang Chunne. The trail drops towards the valley that leads through a steep, rough climb to a crest towards the Tar valley. Walk past Tsakang, the 800 years old Buddhist Monastery en route to the ancient Mani walls. Walk past the Mani walls to reach Shey Gompa Monastery. Overnight in Shey Gompa.

Spend the day hiking around the beautiful village and witness the traces of Bon-Po Religion. You may also witness Tibetan-styled villages surrounded by juniper and larch forests. A short hike brings you to Shey Gompa, built-in 1655 in reverence to the Sakyamuni Buddha. You may find the statues of Padmasambhava Guru Rinpoche, Sakyamuni, and Milarepa. Just beside the majestic Gompa lies the Crystal Mountain. You can later head towards Tsakang Monastery. Overnight in Shey Gompa.

Wake up to the beautiful view of Crystal Mountain. After enjoying your breakfast, you’ll begin trekking through equally beautiful juniper trees towards a grey, stony canyon. Walk past numerous bare-rock and coarse terrain towards the high pass of Saldang La. From here, you’ll begin climbing downhill along with the herds of Yak and Sheep towards the Yak pastures. The day ends at Namduna Gaun that is home to the Namgung Monastery. You can consider visiting the beautiful red-stone Monastery in the evening or the next morning. Overnight in Namduna.

The day begins with a scenic tour to Namgung Monastery. Enjoy seeing the rich architecture of the Monastery and meet the local monks. After breakfast, you’ll begin climbing the steep slope and walk into the dusty barren mountains. The steep trail goes for almost 3 hours. Once at the top of the ridge, you can catch the delightful sight of Saldang Village awaiting you. Climb down the high ridge towards Nagma Khola stream and begin trekking towards Saldang. Despite its remoteness, Saldang is the largest village in the Upper Dolpo Region. The entire region consists of five different villages, with over six hundred people. Overnight in Saldang.

Leaving Saldang, the trail begins to climb north along the Nagaon Khola or Nagaon River. The trail advances through wild and barren terrain and continues through numerous zigzag trails en route to Marang. Walk past Marang and Ki villages to arrive at the tributary of Panzang River. The trail continues upstream along the Panzang River and heads east towards Yangze Gompa, an old Bon-Po Monastery. You’ll spend the night camping at Yangze Gompa. Overnight in Yangze Gompa.

Leaving Yangze, you’ll retrace your path and begin climbing downhill towards Saldang village. The short trail saves time, which opens access to the trail leading towards Sibu village. Continue walking along the river, and trek past terraced fields, Stupas, Chortens, and Mani Wall towards Chaiba monastery. The trail drops towards Namdo village located just beside Nam Khong Khola. A short trek along the Nam Khong Khola brings you to the small hamlet of Sibu. Overnight in Sibu.

Leaving Sibu, you’ll continue walking upstream along the Nam Khong Khola. The trail advances alongside Yak caravans towards the Tibetan border. Turn east and continue trekking towards the confluence of two small streams. The final section of the trail goes past steep climb towards Yak pasture just below Jeng La Pass (4900m). After the early morning breakfast, you’ll embark on the steep climb of Jeng La Pass (4900m). It may take almost two long hours to reach the top of Jeng La Pass, from where you can catch the majestic sight of the north face of the Dhaulagiri massif. The trail begins to climb down through a rough trail towards Tarap Valley located just beside the massive Tarap Chu River. A short trek brings you to Tokyu village located just beside Tarap Chu River. Overnight in Tokyu.

Leaving Tokyu, the trail begins to climb downhill towards a plain valley surrounded by grass meadows. The trail continues along the Tarap Chu River and goes through marshy land. You’ll continue trekking through the remote marshland towards the small settlement of Dho Tarap. The entire trek may last almost 5 hours. Overnight in Dho Tarap.

Leaving Dho Tarap, the trail begins to descend towards a wide valley and leads into the gorges. Continue trekking along with the lush juniper and wild rose bushes. You may witness the rare sight of the herds of blue sheep climbing the nearby cliffs. After a lengthy descent, you’ll arrive at the confluence of Tarap Chu and Lang Khola. You’ll continue trekking towards the village of Serkam. Overnight in Serkam.

Leaving Khanigaon, you’ll begin trekking downhill through the lush forests towards Lalberi. As you begin descending, the lush forests, terraced fields, and small settlements begin to appear often. A short downhill hike brings you to Tarakot. Upon arrival, you can enjoy your lunch and then embark on a short hike towards Sandul Gompa located at a juncture of Barbung Khola and Tarap Chu. You’ll spend the night in a camp just beside Tarap Chu River about 150 meters below Tarakot village. Overnight in Tarakot.

Catch an early morning flight from Juphal to Nepalgunj. A scenic trans-Himalayan flight offers the equally spectacular view of beautiful mountains. Catch the pristine snow-capped peak of Dhaulagiri as you fly towards Nepalgunj. Upon arrival, you’ll enjoy your breakfast and then embark on a connecting flight back to Kathmandu. Upon arrival, you can choose to rest in the hotel or head out to explore the beautiful city.

The difficulty of the trek

The trek is of moderate difficulty. It gets hard even for experienced trekkers. It is difficult because you have to travel at high altitudes where you might suffer from altitude sickness. Similarly, the trails are also difficult. So, make sure you are prepared for that.  So, make sure you are fully prepared for this trek. Also, have every piece of equipment with you.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit Upper Dolpo Trek is during the spring and autumn seasons. This season provides you with a perfect climate. Similarly, the weather is stable and you can climb with clear visibility. But, this climbing can also be done in the monsoon seasons.

Travel insurance

You have to compulsorily have travel insurance with you. Similarly, make sure your insurance company covers your 4000m plus trekking insurance. If you don’t have that then it will be difficult for us to cooperate with you.

Meals and Accommodation

The Meals and Accommodation we provide are twin sharing accommodation on tented camp and breakfast, lunch, and dinner during the trek. In addition, we do adjustments as per our consumer desire for the meal. Similarly, we understand what is important for our consumers. So, feel free and enjoy your tour.

Fitness and experience requirements

You have to be physically fit and experienced to do this long trek. Similarly, if you have any health problems then you cannot do this trek. Make sure you don’t have heart and blood diseases. Most importantly, then the trek will be fun for you and you can fully enjoy yourself. If you are physically fit and have some experience.

Shey Phoksundo National Park Fee: NPR 3000 for foreigners and NPR 1500 for SAARC.

Upper Dolpo Special permit: USD 500 for 10 days and USD 50 per day for extra days 1 week

If you want to experience the perfect weather and climate for this hike, then we recommend you travel during the spring and monsoon seasons. These seasons provide you with the best scenery of the surrounding. Similarly, the temperature is also moderate. And, you can travel in a clear sky.

1. Cancellation Policy

There is no cancellation or withdrawal policy for the trip by the client after the trip has started. During the trip, any unused services provided by the company, like accommodation, food, permits, etc., won’t be refunded.

If you cancel the trip at any time before the departure date, 90% of the total cost is reusable for a year or refunded. Visit this page for more details on the cancellation policy.

2. Risk of unforeseen circumstances

Nepal Alternative Treks is directed towards the fulfillment of your every desire. In this connection, we perform our duties honestly & seriously to make your journey very smooth & pleasant. However, Nepal Alternative Treks will not take any responsibility regarding any change & alternations in the itinerary due to unavoidable circumstances such as landslides, road blockage, flood, snow, political unrest, flight cancellation, delayed arrival, sickness, or accidents. The clients shall bear any extra cost incurred there on the spots.

3. Clients' Responsible

A trekking guide representing Nepal’s alternative treks deserves all authority during your tours. If you commit an unlawful act, you must leave the tour, and no refund will be issued.

4. Impact on your journey

On any account, we’re not answerable for any loss or damage of your luggage or property belonging to you even when shouldered by guide cum porter or transferred by transport means. That means your personal possessions and luggage are at your risk at the time.

7. Porter weight limit

Porter will carry 10 kg each and 20 kilograms in total. A bit more or less can be adjusted per both parties’ mutual understanding.
