The trip starts from Jomsom to Kagbeni after a scenic flight from Pokhara with pleasing views of mountains like Dhaulagiri (8167m), Nilgiri (7061m), Damodar (4890m), Annapurna (8091m), and many more. Along the way, you get to view the stunning Kaligandaki river valleys.

Following the views of the high Tibetan Plateau, you will explore the region of Upper Mustang. Crossing the tough and beautiful Lo La Pass (3950m), you will arrive in Lo Mangthang. Observe the traditional houses of Lo Mangthang village and explore the royal palace and the impressive caves, including Jhong caves. Visit the stunning monasteries that showcase the Tibetan culture. Passing through the quaint villages, you will return back to Pokhara by overland. From the lake city of Pokhara, you will drive back to Kathmandu.

Day 1

Drive to Pokhara

The trip begins at Kathmandu. After a delicious breakfast, you’ll embark on tourist bus and begin driving along with your trek guide and porter to Pokhara. Located 200km west to Kathmandu, the scenic overland journey goes alongside the massive Trishuli River. Witness the lush forests, massive river, and the Himalayas en route to Pokhara. The entire journey may last anywhere from 5-6 hours. Upon arrival, you’ll drive to Lakeside town of Pokhara and check into the hotel. You can spend the evening exploring the beautiful Phewa Lake and the neighboring town. Overnight in Pokhara.

Day 2

Fly to Jomsom - Trek to Kagbeni En route Lubra village

After breakfast in Pokhara, you will catch an early flight to Jomsom. The scenic flight to Jomsom offers an astonishing view of the mountains. After you reach Jomsom airport, the trek starts as you head towards Kagbeni. You will witness the spectacular landscape variation as you walk alongside the Kaligandaki River. After walking an hour to Panda Khola, you will take alternative trek path to Lubra village. You will have a lunch there and explore bon monastery and only the bon village -Lubra then a beautiful trail takes you to Kagbeni village, where the houses are unique and ornated with clay effigies. Stay overnight in Kagbeni ( Hotel Nilgiri ).

Day 3

Trek to Chele

After having breakfast at Kagbeni, you will start the trek towards Chele. The trail includes walking alongside the bank of Kaligandaki River as you follow the trail with some ups and downs. Continuing the 6-hour trek, you will approach old stupas and some caves. Then, you will ascend the cliff to reach Chele. Overnight stay at a lodge.

Trek to Syangboche

From Chele, you trek towards Syangboche. You will pass through some dry meadows and monasteries. En route, you can catch the sight of Yaks passing by. The trail is a bit tough as you encounter Taklam La Pass (3,624m) and Darjori La Pass (3735m). The 6-hour trek rewards you with astounding views of hills, plateaus, and the Himalayan ranges. Passing through few exciting caves, the trail descends into Samar village and declines further towards the other sharper route to reach Syangboche. Overnight stay at Syangboche.

Trek to Ghami

You will trek towards Ghami today. The trail initially follows the inclination route towards the ridge of Syangboche by crossing the tough pass, Yamada La pass (3850m). The trail follows Chortens, some quaint villages, and barley fields. Following the forested trail, you will come across another pass Nyi La Pass (4010m). The trail starts to descend from here until you reach Ghami. Overnight stay at a lodge in Ghami.

Trek to Tsarang

After breakfast, you will leave for another exciting village known as Tsarang. You will trek through the slippery pathways to cross the Ghami Khola via a suspension bridge. Trek to Lo-Mangthang

Today, the trek starts from Tsarang, accompanied by a great view of the barren plateaus. Crossing a river, you will incline the Lo La Pass (3950m), from where you will get a clear glance at Lo Mangthang village. Lo Mangthang is a beautiful village with a rich history. Home to the ancient palace of Lo, you will get a glimpse of the beautiful mountains such as Nilgiri, Annapurna I, and Bhrikuti Peak. Overnight stay at the lodge.

Day 8

Explore Around Cave and Monasteries by Jeep

Enjoy a delicious breakfast, and then embark on a scenic sightseeing tour outside Lo Manthang. After exiting the city, you’ll begin trekking towards the ancient Nyiphu and Garphu Monasteries. These monasteries lay close to the 2,500 years old Jhong Caves. After exploring the beautiful monasteries, you’ll begin climbing the Jhong Cave, which comprises a large intersection of caves with 44 different compartments.The day will end with a tour to the Summer Palace of the Late King of Mustang, Raja Jigme Dorje Palbar Bista. After witnessing this historical site, you’ll head towards the Namgyal Gompa.

Drive to Marpha

Day 10

Drive to Pokhara

After early breakfast, Jump on Jeep to ride to Pokhara. The scenic trans-Himalayan flight takes you over the massive Annapurna massif and the Kali Gandaki Gorge, Rupse Waterfall and Tatopani towards Pokhara City. Upon arrival, you can enjoy your breakfast and spend the day exploring the beautiful city. Pokhara is the ultimate tourist getaway and is home to numerous tourist sites such as Phewa Lake, Tal Barahi Temple, Davis Fall, Gupteshwor Cave, UNESCO designated Pokhara Peace Pagoda, and Mountain Museum. Enjoy the completion of the trip with a lavish dinner beside the beautiful Phewa Lake. Overnight in Pokhara.

Day 11

Drive to Kathmandu

Today is the last day of the trip. Catch the mesmerizing sight of Annapurna I and Machhapuchhre Peaks from the hotel. After breakfast, you’ll embark on a tourist bus and begin driving back to Kathmandu. The half-day long drive goes alongside Trishuli River and the colorful towns of Manakamana and Malekhu en route to Kathmandu. Overnight in Kathmandu.

When to visit

The trek to Upper Mustang can be done throughout the year. Although Upper Mustang Trek is done throughout the year, the best time to do Upper Mustang Trek is during the spring and autumn seasons. There are several types of the trek at Upper Mustang. One of them is the drive-out trek. Drive out trek is a trek in which you trek by foot for half of the journey and you return by jeep. It is very famous among both national and international visitors. Similarly, it is very fun. Therefore, you must choose the correct time to do this trek. If you travel here during this time of the year then you will find an ideal climate to trek. So, you can do this trek at this time of the year. During this time of the year, the climate is moderately stable and suitable. Therefore, it can be very helpful for people who want to enjoy the scenery and the surroundings.

The difficulty of this trek

When you travel to a high altitude the difficulties are uncertain. Similarly, you are gonna face several difficulties. The difficulties can be the steep and long trails. Shortage of suitable accommodation facilities. In addition, you might also not be able to find guides or porters because they might already be hired by other trekkers. So, you should book your accommodation facilities, guides, and porters ahead of your journey. Likewise, they play a vital role in your journey to make it memorable. Additionally, the other challenge that you are going to face is high altitude sickness although it is a common problem among climbers or trekkers. Similarly, you will feel uneasy walking, you might feel dizzy. So, to prevent that you should drink enough water. In addition, you should properly acclimate yourself before the trek. Furthermore, if you travel here during the off-season then you might find bad weather and climate to trek on. So, you should visit in the spring and autumn seasons to find a suitable climate.

Meals and Accommodations

There is a wide range of Meals and Accommodation facilities available at Upper Mustang Trek. Similarly, we provide visitors with suitable lodges, hotels, and guest houses. But trekkers here prefer to stay at local tea houses as they are cheaper than other accommodation facilities. Similarly, we also provide quality meals for our trekkers. In addition, we provide our trekkers with meals three times a day. Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner. Likewise, the foods we provide are mostly local Nepali foods and some western foods. However, western foods are slightly more expensive than the local Nepali foods because for Western foods they need to import them from the cities which adds up to their cost. Whereas local Nepali food and spices are mostly produced from the local farmland. So, it is cheaper than Western foods.

Required Permits

Mustang Special Permit : USD 500 for 10 days and USD 50 per day for extra days.

ACAP : NPR. 3000 for foreigners and NPR 1000 for SAARC.

Travel insurance

You are traveling at high altitudes. So, traveling at high altitudes has its risks. Therefore, your travel insurance plays as a backup for your journey if something uncertain happens to you. You should first show your travel insurance to the travel department of Kathmandu. Only after seeing this, will they give you your traveling permit for the trek. Similarly, your travel insurance helps you cover your medical expenses, repatriation expenses, rescue mission, loss of property e.t.c. In addition, we strongly recommend your insurance policy has covered all the adventure activities and trekking policies over 3000m. If all these policies are covered then it would be easy for us to cooperate. Furthermore, if you cannot provide the original insurance policy at the beginning of your tour then make sure you have a copy of your policy with you, it will be helpful for you to choose a befitting policy at the time.

Fitness and experience requirement

This Upper Mustang Drive Out Trek is an 11-day long trek. So, your walk should be strenuous.  Likewise, we all know walking at a high altitude is physically challenging. However, if you have excellent health with average physical condition with a positive attitude you can easily complete this trek. Other than that, be careful that you don’t have any health problems. In addition, you should walk at your own pace. In addition, walking and jogging/running ahead of your journey are very beneficial. Furthermore, having a little bit of knowledge of hiking and trekking is favorable. However, visitors with less knowledge can do this trek as well.

Climate and weather

Your trekking journey is highly dependent on the good weather of the place because it can either increase or decrease your experience at high peaks. Similarly, choosing a good time is equally important. So, we recommend you travel during the spring and monsoon seasons. These seasons provide you with the best scenery of the surrounding. Similarly, the temperature is also moderate. If you want to experience the perfect weather and climate these seasons are perfect. In addition to this if you travel here at this time then you will see the beautiful scenery of the landscapes and plateaus in the lap of the mighty Himalayas.
