The clear and sunny weather also offers a mesmerizing view of the mountains from a far range, making the trek to the mountains even more thrilling and fascinating.
The month of May doesn’t bring any snowfalls or harsh cold as it falls in Spring but the later part of the month leads to the pre-monsoon season which means you can experience slight rainfall in this month.
In case of temperature the morning and night are chilly so be prepared by packing in warm clothes to stay warm. On the other hand, the days are warm and sunny and the temperature will rise to 15 to 20 degrees but in the morning and night, it will decrease to 5 degrees Celsius.
Generally, trekkers wake up early to reach the highest vantage point of the trek to see the sunrise. The highest vantage point lies in Kalapathar an altitude of over 5000m from where you can explore all of the base camp area but as the temperature begins to rise you will feel warm and have to quickly descend to the Namche Bazaar.
During May the sun shines for almost 9 hours per day and during afternoons you will experience fast winds which can blow up to 15km/hr making the May month almost perfect for trekking EBC.
Permits Required For Everest Base Camp Trek
To trek in the Khumbu region and reach the Everest Base Camp, trekkers need two permits – the Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit and the Khumbu Rural Municipality Permit.
The Khumbu Rural Municipality Permit costs $20 or Rs 2,000 and is required for all foreign nationals visiting the Khumbu Municipality including the trekkers from the SAARC countries like India, Pakistan, Srilanka etc. You can get it at the Sagarmatha National Park Counter.
The Sagarmatha National Park permit costs $30 or Rs 3,000 and is required for all trekkers heading towards the base camp.
You can get it at the National Tourism Board Office or the Sagarmatha National Park Entry Gate. Don’t forget to carry these permits and your TIMS card while trekking in the Khumbu region.
Keep in mind that you will only be able to issue these permits if you have the proper documents that you need to enter Nepal like your passport, visa, and also some passport-size photos. If you have these documents along with a TIMS card and then spend the fees required to get the permit you will get the permits to be able to trek the EBC region during May.
Guide and Porter For Trek in May
If you want to experience a comfortable, secure, and strain-free experience of the Everest Base Camp Trek in May then it is recommended you hire guides and porters during your trek. Guides and Porters will help you immensely during your trekking journey as they are some of the most experienced personnel you will find during your trek.
You have to keep in mind ever since April 1, 2023, you have to hire a Guide compulsorily as you can’t trek any region of Nepal alone and without the proper guidance of the authorized guide. You can easily book guides via a travel agency. They will provide you with a list of options on guides that you can hire based on their experience, cost, and number of times they have explored the region.
A rule for taking at least one guide has been implemented to guarantee the safety of trekkers in new regions. This is especially important for foreign tourists who may easily get lost or experience unexpected issues. Hiring a guide can not only prevent you from getting lost but also provide you with detailed explanations and a deeper understanding of the local culture.
Guides also play a very important role in case of sudden emergencies like blocked roads, staying overnight in the local lodge, in case of altitude sickness, and even if you need any kind of rescue. Over the years they have built many important contacts that can help you to either extend your trek, get away from any problems, or need rescue in emergency conditions.
However they do not help in hand-to-hand assistance like carrying heavy loads, or taking care of your equipment, so this is where porters come in. Porters are local people who are experienced climbers and trekkers. They help tourists or trekkers by carrying their bags themselves or via their mules and yaks. They also keep a good eye on your gear, equipment, and clothing and take full responsibility for your items so you won’t have to worry about them and enjoy the complete experience of your trekking.
So if you want hassle-free and complete freedom during your trek then we recommend you hire guides and porter. Hiring a porter will also ensure employment for local Sherpa people which they can use to upgrade their lives and even their surrounding area which will benefit tourists and trekkers in the future.

Highly experienced veteran trekkers believe May is one of the best times to trek Everest Base Camp. Many factors determine which time is the best for any trekking destination so let’s get into it.
Favorable Weather Condition
One of the major factors that makes or ruins any trekking program is the weather conditions of the destination. It is no surprise that trekkers normally prefer bright sunny weather instead of hot and humid, cold and snowy, or even rainy weather.
This is the reason, May is the optimum time for the EBC trek as it falls on the peak Spring season. There is almost no sign of rainfall and winter has just passed so there is no sign of snowfall as well. During this month there is no sign of natural disasters like floods, landslides, soil erosions, and even heavy snowstorms.
Breathtaking Vista
The trekkers all around the world are always looking for one thing during their trek and that is beautiful views around them. Now let’s combine them with the beautiful mountain region and you will get magical and breathtaking vistas of panoramic mountains that you will never see in your life unless you visit the Khumbu region again.
This month also compounds the beautiful view because the days are bright and sunny and there is no haziness or fog so as soon as you reach a top height or vantage point you can experience some of the best mountainous views of your lifetime.
Explore Sagarmatha National Park

Additionally, May is a great time to see rare and endangered species of flora and fauna, such as red pandas and snow leopards, that are active during this period.
May and mid-autumn (September, October, and November) are considered the best months for experienced trekkers and veterans to trek to Everest Base Camp. During these periods, the weather is dry and sunny, and the skies are clear, providing trekkers with breathtaking views of the Himalayas.

Normally the places are so booked some trekkers even have to return however if you manage to book early then you might get your best-ever food and lodging experience during your EBC trek.
Everest Base Camp Trek Difficulty During May
Everest Base Camp Trek is among the most popular, challenging but achievable treks in the world. Some experienced trekkers even put it as an easy or moderate-level trek but make no mistake this trek does provide some difficulty, especially in May so let’s get into it.
Crowd Area
One of the most common difficulties that trekkers face especially in May or in the Spring season is the extremely crowded route during your EBC trek. During this month due to the favorable weather conditions and the ability to experience stunning views, the EBC trek easily becomes one of the most trek routes in the world. Furthermore, there are also a few other trekking routes that mix with the EBC route so if you are looking for quite a private trek then you will not be able to experience it this month.
Altitude Sickness
Altitude Sickness is a common problem faced by trekkers during the EBC trek, especially if you’re over 3000m above sea level. The symptoms of Altitude Sickness can be severe and include headache, shortness of breath, dizziness, fatigue, nausea, and body and joint aches.
However, there are some simple yet effective ways to prevent Altitude Sickness during the trek. Gradual ascent and descent while climbing the altitude is important to avoid rushing to the top, which can be dangerous. That’s why an acclimatization day is necessary to get used to the weather and altitude of the region, usually done in Namche Bazaar during the trek.
Another major cause of Altitude sickness is dehydration. Therefore, it’s crucial to keep your body hydrated at all times during your trek. Drinks with ginger, lemon, and honey are especially helpful in keeping the body warm and reducing the risk of Altitude sickness.
It’s always a good idea to be prepared for the worst. Purchasing medication for sickness like Diamax is highly recommended. If the symptoms persist, you must immediately lower your altitude to avoid further complications.
Distance and Duration
Another major difficulty that the trekkers face while EBC trekking in May is the duration they have to walk per day and the distance they have to cover. It takes from 10 to 12 days to complete the Everest Base Camp trek and the trek begins from Lukla. You have to approximately cover 65 kilometers to reach the base camp which means you have to walk 5-6 km every day.
Furthermore, the route of the Base Camp is not easy as you have to go through ups and downs roads, twists and turning trails, rocky mountains, stony steeps, and snow-capped mountains that will drain the energy of anyone willing to test their body. So it is highly recommended to be physically fit and raise your stamina to easily conquer the base camp trekking journey.
