Everest Three Passes Trek Overview

The Everest Three High Passes Trek is a perfect adventure for trekkers who want to explore more than just Everest Base Camp. On this trek in the Himalayas, you will cross the three highest mountain passes in the Everest region:

  • Kongma La Pass (5,535 meters)
  • Cho La Pass (5,420 meters)
  • Renjo La Pass (5,340 meters)

This is a 16-day trek made for experienced trekkers who want to see everything the Everest region has to offer. You’ll walk through beautiful valleys, climb high mountain passes, and see many famous places.

Your journey starts with a short flight to Lukla, then a walk to Phakding, and then to Namche Bazaar, where you’ll stop to rest and get used to the height. From Namche, you’ll head to Thame and Lungden, and then cross your first high pass, Renjo La, to reach the beautiful Gokyo Lake. You’ll also climb Gokyo Ri, a nearby peak, to see amazing views of snow-covered mountains, including Mt Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu.

Next, you’ll cross the Cho La Pass, a tricky and icy trail to reach Everest Base Camp (EBC). From EBC, you can also climb Kala Patthar to watch a beautiful sunrise over Mount Everest. The last big challenge is Kongma La Pass.

After crossing it, you’ll go down to Chhukhung and then to Tangboche, where you’ll visit a famous monastery. Then you’ll walk back to Namche Bazaar and return to Lukla. From Lukla, you’ll fly back to Kathmandu, ending your 16 days Everest three passes trek adventure. With enough rest days planned, this trek helps your body adjust to the height and gives you time to enjoy every moment in the Himalayas.

Not to mention, the trek to Everest Three Passes trek gives you the chance to see amazing lakes, glaciers, and some of the tallest mountains in the world, like Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu. Along the way, you’ll also visit the quiet and untouched Nangpa La Valley, the peaceful Sherpa village of Marlung, and the beautiful monastery village of Thame. These places give you a chance to experience local culture and the simple mountain lifestyle.

  • Walk alongside stunning glaciers, such as Ngozumpa and Khumbu.

What Makes Three Passes Trek Difficult?

The Everest Three Passes Trek is one of the hardest treks in the Everest region. All three passes: Kongma La, Cho La, and Renjo La (5,360m), are above 5,000 meters, where the air is very thin and it’s harder to breathe. Walking at such high altitudes can make you feel dizzy, tired, or sick, especially if your body doesn’t get enough time to adjust. Additionally, you will spend many days trekking at altitudes above 4,000 meters, which further raises the difficulty level.

The trail itself is also hard to walk on. You’ll cross glaciers, loose stones, and narrow paths where one wrong step can be dangerous. Some parts, like the climb after the Hillary Bridge and icy descent from Kongma La Pass, are very tough and can even feel scary. There are also sections that go nearly straight up or down, making it hard on your knees and legs. The rough, rugged terrain makes the trek physically demanding and requires good focus and balance. Overall, this trek tests your strength, patience, and preparation.

How is the Weather during the Everest Three Passes Trail

The weather on the Everest Three Passes Trek is cold and changes with the seasons. Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the best times to go. The skies are usually clear, the views are beautiful, and the trails are dry. During these months, daytime temperatures can range from -5°C to 10°C, but nights can still get below freezing. At high altitudes, even spring days can feel icy, and you’ll need warm clothes all the time.

Winter (December to February) is the coldest time. Temperatures can drop as low as -21°C, especially in January and February. Snow often blocks the high passes like Kongma La, Cho La, and Renjo La, making the trek very risky. Summer (June to August) is warmer, with temperatures between 5°C and 18°C, but heavy rain and clouds make the trails slippery and the views foggy.

Major Highlight of Everest Three Passes Trek

Cho La Pass

Cho La is the middle or second Pass among the Everest Three Passes. Located at 5,420 m (17,782 ft), the Pass lies in the northeast part of Nepal and connects the village of Dzongla to the east with the town of Thagnak to the west. Also, the Pass connects Everest Base Camp to Gokyo. From the Pass, trekkers can appeal to their eyes with snow-capped peaks, including Ama Dablam, Cholatse, and Makalu. However, the cross to Cho La involves walking through icy, rocky, and glacier sections, adding to the thrill of the journey.

Kongma La Pass

Kongma La is the most challenging Pass of the Everest Three Passes. At an elevation of 5,535 m (18,159 ft), the Pass is the highest among the three passes. It connects Chukhung village with Lobuche. The Pass lies between Imja Valley and Khumbu Glacier and is difficult to navigate. Even though crossing Kongma La is challenging, it is equally rewarding as it offers a 360-degree view of glacial lakes, rugged terrain, and mountain peaks. The vista of Mount Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, and Ama Dablam is awe-inspiring from the top of the Pass.

Renjo La Pass

Located at an elevation of 5,360 m (17,585 ft), Renjo La Pass is one of the easiest passes on the Everest Three Pass trek. The Pass connects the Gokyo Valley with Thame village and provides spectacular views of turquoise Gokyo lakes, Mount Everest, Lhotse, Cho Oyu, and Makalu. Crossing Renjo La Pass includes steep ascents, descents, and rocky paths, requiring a good fitness level.

Sagarmatha National Park

Sagarmatha National Park, established in 1976, is a protected area in the Everest region of Nepal. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site with an awe-inspiring landscape and diverse ecosystem. The journey to the Everest Three Pass takes place within the national park and offers a glimpse of diverse flora and fauna.

Scenic Landscapes

The Journey to Everest Three Passes offers the stunning and diverse landscape of the Sagarmatha area. From lush valleys to rugged terrain and towering peaks, the trek takes trekkers through some of the world’s most eye-appealing scenery. The panorama of some of the highest peaks in the world, turquoise lakes, glaciers and moraines, and lush valleys will create long-lasting memories among trekkers on the high pass trek.

Accommodation Facilities on Everest Three Passes Trek

Tea houses are the common accommodation facilities on the Everest Three Passes trek. The local Sherpas of the Everest region run tea houses, which offer a comfortable lodging option. The accommodation point is budget-friendly, with basic amenities like single rooms with twin-sharing beds and shared bathrooms. The bed in the room has a basic mattress, blanket, and pillows.

The luxurious option is minimal on the route to the Everest Three Passes. Yet, Lower areas, including Lukla, Phakding, and Namche Bazaar, offer luxury hotels with private rooms with attached bathrooms, hot showers, and electricity.

As you move higher, the tea houses are the only option offering simple rooms and amenities. It provides mobile charging and hot water facilities, but at an extra cost. Moreover, at lower elevations, the price per night ranges from USD 10 to 15 for a basic one, whereas a luxury one costs USD 50 or more. Similarly, it costs USD 15-20 at higher elevations per night.

Food and Water during Three Pass trek

Teahouses provide food along with accommodation on the Everest Three Pass trek route. It offers a mix of local Nepali dishes and Western-style meals to suit different tastes. However, the availability and variety of food depend on altitudes and locations. Dal Bhat, Tibetan bread, and Thukpa are common local Nepalese foods that the tea houses serve, and pasta, porridge, and pancakes are some Western-style foods. Oatmeal, eggs, toast, Muesli, cornflakes, Porridge, and tea/coffee are options for Breakfast. Similarly, common options for lunch and dinner on the trail to the Everest Three Pass trek include Dal Bhat, noodles, pizza, pasta, sandwiches, dumplings, and soup.

The food is freshly cooked with simpler yet healthy ingredients. Choices for food at lower elevations are vast, whereas options at higher elevations are limited due to no access to roads and transportation; thus, consider bringing some light snacks or energy bars. For drinking water, consider carrying a refillable water bottle, as numerous streams and taps are available throughout the trail. However, don’t consume the Water directly; instead, have it only after purifying it with a water purification tablet. Yet, mineral water is also available, but it becomes more expensive as you ascend higher, costing USD 1 to 4 per bottle.

Distance from Everest Base Camp to Three Passes Trek

The journey to Everest Three Pass is circular, clockwise, followed by Renjo La, Cho La, and Kongma La. The distance from Everest Base Camp to Three Passes is approximately 49.5 km, which takes trekkers from the highest passes of the region to the most iconic destination, the base of the world’s highest peak, Everest Base Camp. The journey spans a range of elevations, from 2,860 m to 5,644 m, featuring well-marked sections and more challenging, rocky, and steep terrain.

Here is the table that showcases the distance from Everest Base Camp to Three Passes, along with elevation, distance, and highlights between the points:

Required Permits and Documents for 3 Pass Trek

A Sagarmatha National Park permit and a Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entry permit are mandatory to complete the trek to the Everest Three Passes. The permit for Sagarmatha National Park is crucial as the trek takes place within the protected area. The Sagarmatha National Park permit costs NPR 3,000 for foreigners and NPR 1,500 for SAARC nationals. Similarly, a Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality permit is necessary to access the local area managed by the municipality, ensuring the funds are used for the area’s development. The permit costs NPR 3,000 per person.

You can get the  Sagarmatha National Park permit at the Nepal Tourism Board, Kathmandu. However, it requires documents, including a copy of a valid passport and passport-sized photos. Likewise, you can obtain the permit at the municipality checkpoint of Lukla, which requires a copy of a valid passport. Yet, with no worries, Nepal Alternative Treks provides you with all the necessary documents and paperwork.

Communication and Internet facilities

As Everest Three Pass is in a remote location, communication and internet facilities are limited. Choose Ncell and NTC for reliable communication, which provides 2G and 3G mobile network coverage. Yet, NTC has better coverage and is the preferred choice among trekkers going on the trek to the Everest Three Pass.

Additionally, internet connection on the route varies by location and altitude. At lower elevations, mobile networks and Wi-Fi are fast. At mid-high altitudes, internet speed falls and is suitable only for messages and light browsing. However, in the passes including Kongma La, Cho La, and Renjo La, the internet doesn’t exist, and communication relies on satellite phones. Additionally, most tea houses along the trek offer Wi-Fi, but the cost increases with the altitude.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is most important when trekking on challenging routes like Everest Three Passes. It is necessary for emergency evacuation and medical coverage in case of injury or fall. The trek is demanding, taking you through a remote location with various risks. Thus, investing in a small amount for insurance is better than facing huge costs if something goes wrong.

One thing to keep in mind is that you must purchase insurance from your own country, as no company in Nepal provides travel insurance to foreigners. However, before purchasing, ensure that the insurance covers trekking at altitudes up to 6,000 m, includes helicopter rescue, and covers delays, medical expenses, and trip cancellation.

Fitness and Experience Requirements

The trek to the three high passes of Everest is physically challenging and requires proper preparation. Proper preparation for a couple of months is crucial to completing the trek successfully and safely.

Physical preparation

The trek requires a high physical preparation due to long walking days and steep climbs. Focusing on exercise that helps core body strength and leg muscles is crucial. While preparing yourself physically, focus on:

  1. Cardiovascular exercise: Involve running, cycling, swimming, jumping, and stair climbing to build stamina.
  2. Leg Strength Training: Practice hiking while carrying a backpack to strengthen your legs. Also, practice exercises like squats, lunges, and step-ups.

Mental Preparation:

Besides physical demands, the trek to Everest Three Pass is mentally challenging. Remind yourself that you’re trekking in one of the most challenging adventures, and while it will definitely bring toughness, it is worth it. Be ready to face unpredictable weather, altitude discomfort, and prolonged walking days. Make yourself prepared by practicing meditation and breathing exercises to stay calm and focused during challenging moments.

Proper acclimatization

Due to the rapid gain in elevation, acclimatization plays a crucial role during the trek to the Everest Three Pass. As the rapid altitude gain leads to issues related to altitude sickness, it should be managed properly. And one effective way to manage the altitude-related risk is by acclimatization. That’s why the Everest Three Pass Trek itinerary includes a separate day for acclimatization so that your body can adjust to the changed temperature and environment.

The trek involves crossing three high-altitude passes, including Kongma La (5,535 m/18,159 ft), Cho La (5,420 m/17,782 ft), and Renjo La (5,360 m/17,585 ft). Along with the passes, the trek takes you to Everest Base Camp (5,364 m/17,598 ft) and Kala Patthar (5,550 m/18,209 ft). Starting above the elevation of 2,500 m and back-to-back high elevations make the trek to the Everest Three Passes tough. Therefore, don’t skip the acclimatization day as it is the only hope that makes your adventure successful.

Namche Bazaar is the first acclimatization stop on every Everest adventure, including the Everest Three Pass trek. Trekkers spend two nights in the village, with a day hike to higher elevations like the Everest View Hotel or Khumjung village, followed by a return to Namche for a night’s stay. Additionally, on this adventure, you’ll spend an extra day at Everest Base Camp, which also serves as acclimatization. On the day, you’ll hike to EBC, stroll around the base camp area, and return to Gorakshep at the evening.

Choose professional guides

Choosing a professional guide for the Everest Three Passes Trek is essential for your safety and overall experience. As the trek is more difficult than the standard Everest Base Camp route due to the three high passes, hiring a professional guide is a vital part of a safe and successful journey.

A professional guide for the Three Passes Trek should have special skills for the journey. Your chosen guide should know about high-altitude sickness. They should be trained to recognize early signs and know when to stop, retreat, and call for help. Similarly, they should know the trekking routes without a map or GPS. Similarly, choose a guide who knows how to handle emergencies. Since the trek is challenging, your guide must be trained in first aid and have a plan for injuries, sickness, or bad weather.

13 Days Manaslu Trek !

13 Days Manaslu Trek !

My friend and I were lucky to find Tej online before visiting Nepal. We knew we wanted to do a trek, but we weren’t sure exactly which trek. Tej sent us a bunch of itineraries for different treks and we chose the Manaslu circuit. When we arrived our guide, Kumar, was waiting for us at the airport and Tej was able to get us all our permits for the trek done in less than 2 hours which was great. The manaslu trek was absolutely amazing! We were super happy with our whole trip and we were lucky to be able to make the pass even though we saw dozens of other people who had to turn back because of the weather. We are already looking forward to going back next year at the same time to trek Everest and we will definitely use Tej again!

3 Weeks Personal Retreat

“Nepal Alternative Trek addressed my needs according to my schedule and agenda. I stayed most of the time at his home-stay, shuttling between home and the places that I wanted to visit. Tej, the boss behind Nepal Alternative Trek, helped to make my stay in Kathmandu comfortable and productive. He walked me to the monasteries that I wanted to visit and even picked me up when I needed a ride back home.

The home-stay is hosted by his wife and I got to experience living with a Nepalese family, sharing their food, space and laughter.

For the home-stay:
1) Meals available upon request
2) Family get together and chats
3) Regular change of bed-sheets and towels
4) Free WIFI
5) Near Swayambhu and Thamel
6) Safe environment
7) Mountainous forest behind home
8) Walking distance to beautiful monasteries
9) Away from hustle and bustle of towns yet easy to get to town

I left the home-stay with a smile.

All the best,
Richard

6 Months Of Preparation For ABC Trekking

Goal was achieved 4130 meter and 0 degree celsius, Annapurna Base Camp Trek. It was 6 months of preparation. It was challenging target for us. We had dense forest, mountain, and completely wilderness above the treeline, it was windy and terrain .  There is a huge support team. Without them it would not be possible. We can do it , we just have to give time and practice. Mr. Gurung Ji, you with your entire 7 of team were wonderful. They were always ready to help us.

Thanks Mr. Gurung ji for all the support, and guidance that made the trip successful. While all of us focused on Mountain, big thing but there were so many beautiful things along the way, stream, flowers, flora, so many birds I took pictures. So, in summary, phenomenal, success and our confidence there. We know, we can do more and higher in next what bigger thing.

We love nepal and made 3 time visit to this beutiful country and rich culture. This time last year we came with 6 pax and visited Kathmandu , Pohkara and chitwan with a stay of 2 night in each place. We flew to Pohkara and got the van to chitwan and flew to Kathmandu. Tej arranged all transports overland and flights for us. We did not asked for a local guide but it was all smooth and no problem. We are happy with the service provided by Tej and he made all efforts to make us happy. His company performed professional with the very reasonable pricing. We encountered some small problem with the van transporting us back from nagarkot to kathmandu airport. This van was quite small and it came to pick up quite late that we almost missed the flight to pohkara. We told Tej about this and he must take care of this outsourced van company. Anyway the van in pohkara and to chitwan was excellent , big and comfy. So he has corrected the mistake.

Part 2 was our trek to EBC and chola pass for 21 nights. Tej arranged for flight and guide plus porter. For this trekking it was only me and my wife travelling together. We are about 50 years and used the service of 2 porters cause we bought a lot of dry food plus chocolate. We are difficult persons in terms of foreign food. Our guide Ammer and 2 porters are fabulous. They took care of us very well like we are part of their family.

Overall we strongly recommend this company. They are good and not high expensive tag. We will use their service again in June to trek in Langtang. Rocky

A great experience on the Annapurna Circuit

A great experience on the Annapurna Circuit

We had a fantastic experience on the Annapurna Circuit with Nepal Alternative Treks. Tej, the manager, was helpful, professional and efficient in dealing with our requirements and amendments, the arrangements worked smoothly and the information provided to us was excellent. Our guide Kul was brilliant. He was friendly, knowledgable and experienced and took changes in our itinerary in his stride. Our trekking experience was much better with his help in everything from planning the stages of the route to organising our food and accommodation. Just one warning: he is an ace card player and will probably beat you hands down!

A wonderful and interesting trek overall

A wonderful and interesting trek overall

A wonderful & interesting trek overall. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances ( heavy snow fall & Lie ping with a bad cold) we were unable to cross the Ganja la pass. However, our guide Simbir offered us as alternative trek which took us on a difference journey of Nepal. We had the opportunity to visit & stay in many local villages and meet Tamang, Gurung people experience, their lifestyle and culture. We visited our guide’s home town of Chalishgaun and timed it right to join in with Diwali celebrations!

A trip worth of a lifetime!

A trip worth of a lifetime!

Attempting Everest base camp trekking for me & my group was taking it to the next level. Before this, our limits were Kedarnath, MadMaheshwar & Tunganath with max distances of 18-19 kms spread over 2-3 days. Moreover, these tracks are such that people doesn’t necessarily have to trek. They have the option of ponies. EBC involves a lot for people like us (acclimatization to altitude, strength etc.), but above all, you need someone to provide logistical support, moral support that it can be done. This is where Nepal Alternative Treks does a great job. They organized it very well, guides and porters provided were very reliable and cost is reasonable when you compare to others. They can customize your travel plan according to your need.

A trip worth of a lifetime!

A Trek in Ruby Valley !

A Trek in Ruby Valley !

A few weeks ago we went on a trip to Nepal, accompanied by a couple of friends who were on their second trip with Nepal Alternative Trek. Our first goal was to trek to the village of Chalish in Ruby Valley. We decided to go with the services of Nepal Alternative Trek to take us up there. We went there partly by jeep, partly walking through the cultivated terraces, meeting the inhabitants of the different communities who worked there.

I must say that the service that Tej offered us was perfect on all lines. First of all, before our departure, months before, Tej always answered our many questions (luggage, temperature, route to be revised, etc.) Always within 24 hours, he answered with a lot of patience.

All the equipment we thought we would need was available at his office.

Our guide Ammar led us to destination with confidence and professionalism. He knew all the trails, and especially all the shortcuts to avoid us having to go up or down too much along our road. He has managed all the difficulties we have encountered: due to personal reasons, we had to change and our itinerary, and our calendar, and he made everything possible. The whole team adapted to our changes. Our guide contacted Tej who orchestrated the changes without us even having to deal with anything.

The porters were attentive and were always in front of our needs.

Our journey continued towards Bandipur with the driver who made us know the various interesting points, from sunrise to sunset, making detours to take us to the most famous places. Then a 2 days stay in Chitwan, and return to Kathmandu again where the driver carried us without calculating from one place to another – God knows that traffic in Kathmandu, Bakhtapur and Patan can be complicated.

Thanks to Tej, and the whole Nepal Alternative Trek team. We will remember forever that amazing experience.
