Everest Base Camp with Gokyo Lake Trek Overview
The Everest Base Camp with Gokyo Lake trek is a famous trekking adventure that takes us through two amazing valleys, Khumbu and Gokyo. We’ll get to see the famous Everest Base Camp (5,364 m) and the peaceful Gokyo Lakes, all in one journey. Along the way, we’ll enjoy views of the highest mountains in the world, clear blue lakes, and stunning glaciers. The trek includes rest days for acclimatization so that our bodies can adjust to the high altitude.
The Everest Base Camp Gokyo Lake trek begins with a 35-minute flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, the gateway to Everest. From Lukla, we start hiking along the Dudh Koshi River and reach Namche Bazaar. We’ll spend a day here to rest and enjoy short hikes with mountain views.
After Namche, we walk uphill to Debuche, then to Dingboche, where we take another rest day to help acclimate to the altitude. From there, we trek to Lobuche and Gorak Shep, and finally reach the Everest Base Camp. Here, we can see the huge Khumbu Glacier and, during peak season, lots of climbers’ tents.
Next, we hike to Kala Patthar (5,555m) from where we can see one of the best views of Everest. From there, the trail crosses Cho La Pass (5,420 m) and leads us to Gokyo Lake. After reaching the Gokyo village, we climb Gokyo Ri (5,357 m), which offers breathtaking views of Gokyo Valley, Ngozumpa Glacier, and the surrounding mountains. We then descend through Dole and Namche Bazaar, and finally fly back to Kathmandu.
This Everest Base Camp trek via Gokyo Lakes trek gives us the chance to see the tallest mountains in the world, like Mount Everest (8,848.86 m), Lhotse (8,516 m), Nuptse (7,861 m), Ama Dablam (6,812 m), Makalu (8,481 m), and Cho Oyu (8,201 m) up close. We’ll walk through forests, rocky trails, and high passes. The Gokyo Lakes include six stunning glacial lakes with turquoise water surrounded by snow-capped peaks. We’ll also see the Ngozumpa Glacier, one of Nepal’s largest.
Along the way, we pass Sherpa villages like Namche, Dingboche, Tengboche, Dole, and many more, where we’ll see prayer flags, stone walls (mani stones), and old monasteries. These cultural sites add meaning and beauty to the natural views. The Cho La Pass trek section between Gokyo Lake and Everest Base Camp is more challenging because of the steep and icy trail, but it’s very rewarding.

Everest Base Camp with Gokyo Lake Trek Difficulty
The Everest Base Camp with Gokyo Lake Trek is a moderately challenging trek. It is harder than the standard EBC trek because we will be walking at very high altitudes for many days and crossing the Cho La Pass (5,420 m). We will spend more than a week above 4,000 meters, so altitude sickness (AMS) is a real risk. The trek includes several high points like Kalapatthar (5,545 m), Everest Base Camp (5,364 m), Cho La Pass (5,420 m), and Gokyo Ri (5,357 m). There are acclimatization days in places like Namche Bazaar and Dingboche to help our bodies adjust, but the thin air can still make trekking harder.
Further, the trek takes 15 days and covers about 130–150 km. We will walk 5 to 8 hours a day on mixed terrain: forested trails (Phakding – Namche), stone steps (Namche–Debuche), rocky valleys and moraines (Dingboche–Lobuche–Gorakshep), the icy/glacier sections of Cho La, and gentle descent via Gokyo–Dole–Namche. The day we cross Cho La Pass is the hardest. It’s steep, can be snowy or icy, needs an early start, and may require microspikes/crampons in spring or late autumn.
Further, the weather at high altitudes can be cold and windy, and from November to March, the pass can be blocked by snow. Teahouses along the route are basic, with limited facilities, especially higher up. To enjoy this trek, we need good fitness, proper trekking gear, and preparation for long, challenging days on the trail.
Best Season For Everest Base Camp with Gokyo Lake Trek
Note: Temperatures vary by altitude. Nighttime temperatures at Gokyo (4,790m) or Gorakshep (5,164m) can be significantly colder than in Namche Bazaar (3,440m) or Phakding (2,610m).
The best time to do the Everest Base Camp with Gokyo Lake Trek is during spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). In spring, the days are warm and clear, with dry, comfortable trails. Temperatures range from 5°C to 20°C during the day and can drop to -5°C at night in higher areas. Autumn also offers cool, fresh air and clear skies, which means great views of Everest, Lhotse, and Cho Oyu. Daytime temperatures are slightly cooler than spring, and nights can get as cold as -10°C. Winter (December to February) and the monsoon season (June to August) are not ideal. Winter brings very cold temperatures, and the monsoon season brings heavy rain, poor visibility, slippery paths, and frequent Lukla flight delays.

From here, the Everest Base Camp with Gokyo Lake path gets steeper as we climb up the Thukla Pass.
After the pass, the trail becomes a little easier and follows along a quiet river. We keep walking with great views of the Khumbu Glacier nearby. By afternoon, we will reach Lobuche. This place is higher up in the mountains, so the air is thinner and everything costs a bit more. We will rest here for the night and prepare for our exciting journey to Everest Base Camp tomorrow on the famous EBC trail.

The path is rocky and a little tough, but the mountain views are amazing. When we reach Gorakshep, we will check into a guesthouse, get some rest, and have lunch. Then, we will get ready to hike to Everest Base Camp.
On our hike to the base camp, we can notice glaciers and the famous Khumbu Icefall. It takes about 2 hours to reach Everest Base Camp. Once at the base camp, we will see giant mountains like Lhotse, Cho Oyu, and Makalu. The view of Everest itself is obstructed. Standing at Everest Base Camp (5,364 m) is a dream come true. The Cho La Pass trail is a slippery pathway through frozen lakes and rocks covered with ice, with large boulders along the way, so we need to walk carefully with our trek leader and guide. Along the way, we will see colorful prayer flags, frozen lakes, and snowy mountain views.
After crossing the pass, we will hike downhill for a few hours to reach Thangna village (also called Dragnag). The trail stays rough with loose rocks and steep parts, so we will take our time. We will arrive in Thangna by afternoon and can finally rest. We might also enjoy some tasty local Sherpa food before settling in for the night.

These lakes are the highest freshwater lake system in the world and hold significance to both Hindus and Buddhists. The trail is mostly uphill, but the peaceful lakes and mountain views make the walk enjoyable.
When we arrive in Gokyo, we’ll see the third lake, called Dudh Pokhari, right beside the village. In the warmer months, the area is full of green hills and birds like the pretty ruddy shelducks. During the winter, snow covers everything, turning it into a white wonderland. Many trekkers stop here to rest and enjoy the scenery before heading to the ascent of Gokyo Ri the next day.

Read MoreWe love nepal and made 3 time visit to this beutiful country and rich culture. This time last year we came with 6 pax and visited Kathmandu , Pohkara and chitwan with a stay of 2 night in each place. We flew to Pohkara and got the van to chitwan and flew to Kathmandu. Tej arranged all transports overland and flights for us. We did not asked for a local guide but it was all smooth and no problem. We are happy with the service provided by Tej and he made all efforts to make us happy. His company performed professional with the very reasonable pricing. We encountered some small problem with the van transporting us back from nagarkot to kathmandu airport. This van was quite small and it came to pick up quite late that we almost missed the flight to pohkara. We told Tej about this and he
