Nestled under the snowy peaks range, one of the highlights of the Gurja Himal trek is seeing Mount Dhaulagiri. It is the seventh-highest mountain in the world at 8,172 meters. You will also witness the impressive mountain ranges of Churen Himal (7,371 meters) and Gurja Himal (7,193 meters). In the village of Chhantyal, you will see how people rely on farming and herding for their livelihood.

During the winter, when snow blankets the settlement, the villagers move to temporary homes in the lower Dhaula Valley. As you trek through Gurja Khani on the Gurja Himal Trekking trail, you will navigate the maze-like narrow lanes and admire the intricately carved wooden windows of the ancient homes.

Seeing Mount Dhaulagiri, the seventh-highest mountain in the world (8172 m), is a highlight of the Gurja Himal walk. Mountain ranges of Churen Himal (7371 m), Gurja Himal (7193 m), and Dhaulagiri (8172 m). The majority of the “Bishwakarma” residents of the village of Chhantyal depend on farming and herding for their livelihood. There is training in traditional blacksmithing techniques. Their males wore heavy wool jackets that were felted to make them waterproof and were made by women. They climb up to 5,000 meters with their herds in the summer.

They relocate to temporary homes in the lower valley Dhaula during the winter when snow covers the settlement. The slates on one roof touch the roof of the house across from it since the houses are so close to one another. The village is a labyrinth of little lanes. Older residences are adorned with the beautifully carved wooden windows made famous by Gurja Khani artisans.

At higher altitudes, reaching up to around 3255 meters at Gurja Pass, there’s a risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), necessitating careful acclimatization. Weather conditions in the Himalayas can be unpredictable, with daytime temperatures being moderate but dropping significantly at night, sometimes below freezing. Trekkers must prepare for cold conditions, especially during the evenings.

After arriving in Nepal, we will depart towards Beni. Beni is 273 kilometers from Kathmandu, and traveling that distance by bus or jeep will take 8 to 9 hours. We will drive through picturesque valleys, little towns, and terraced farms. We can recover and prepare for the upcoming hike when we get to Beni.

Day 2

Drive to Darbang – trek to Dharapani

For those interested, we will take a side trip to visit the Tibetan Bonpo Monastery in Chentung. This excursion will take around 3–4 hours, providing an opportunity to learn about the Bonpo religion and culture while exploring the monastery. After approximately 6 hours on the road, we will arrive at our hotel in Thamel, Kathmandu. Here, we can celebrate the completion of our trek with a meal at one of the city’s finest restaurants. We will spend the night in Kathmandu, reminiscing about our adventure in the Himalayas.

Best Time For Gujra Dhorpatan Trek

The best time for the Gurja Himal Dhorpatan Trek is during the Pre-monsoon(Spring) and Post-monsoon (Autumn) seasons. During this season, the weather is clearer and offers you the best views of snow-capped mountains and surrounding areas.

Spring starts in March and ends in May. This season is ideal for trekking if you want to experience the blooming rhododendron and other wildflowers season. This adds vibrant colors to your trekking experience. Also, the weather is clear, and the temperature is mild. You will also have a small chance of encountering rainfall. Trekking this season is perfect, but the chance of altitude sickness is a little high because of the blooming rhododendrons.

Autumn season lasts from September to November. Like spring, this season is also mild and clear, but you have a huge chance of encountering mild rainfall, increasing some difficulty in the trek. Also, the major festivals fall during this season. Trekking in autumn will give you a huge chance to experience Nepal’s rich culture and traditions. But make sure you book your accommodation beforehand, as the trail is full of crowds.

However, we recommend you not make your trek during winter ( December to February) and summer (June to August). These are the most unfavorable seasons for trekking. You will encounter huge rainfall in summer, making the trail slippery and risky. Similarly, in winter, snow fills the trails, making them slippery.
