More About Renjo La

Renjo La is one of the three major passes in the popular Everest Three Passes Trek. It is a high-altitude mountain pass in the Khumbu region of Nepal, within Sagarmatha National Park zone. Renjo La (5,360 m above sea level) connects the Gokyo Lakes region to the high-altitude valleys of Renjo and Lumde. The name “Renjo” is believed to originate from the name of a local Sherpa family, underscoring the profound connection between the land and its inhabitants. Similarly, it lies near the path to the Tibet border at Nagpa La.

Historically, Renjo La Pass was used by local Sherpas as a trade route between the Khumbu region and Tibet. Before the 1950s, when the Chinese occupation of Tibet blocked traditional trade routes, this pass allowed Sherpa traders to transport goods between the highlands of Nepal and Tibet.

Likewise, the Pass is part of an ancient Buddhist pilgrimage circuit that many Tibetan Buddhists used for centuries. This route connects the Gokyo region with Tibet, providing a way for monks and pilgrims to travel back and forth across high-altitude passes to reach sacred Buddhist sites. Thus, the Gokyo Lake with Renjo La Pass Trek served as a sacred journey where pilgrims could experience the purification of the body, mind, and soul.

Why Gokyo Lakes via Renjo La is the Best Trek in the Everest Region?

Turquoise Lakes and Towering Summits in the Khumbu

The primary reason why the Gokyo Lakes via Renjo La is the best trek in the Everest region is the stunning scenic view it offers. The superior view of Mount Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu, along with other Himalayan mountain peaks in the Everest region, makes the trek one of the best in the Khumbu region. Similarly, the series of six major pristine, turquoise-blue freshwater glacial lakes, waterfalls, glacier moraines, and other breathtaking landscapes makes the trek ideal for seeing the beauty of the Everest region.

Changing Climate Zones of the Everest Highlands

A diverse landscape is another reason that makes the trek to Gokyo Lake via Renjo Pass the best. The trek presents a diverse range of ecosystems as you progress through varying altitudes. Similarly, the trek takes you through various climate zones, including temperate forests, alpine meadows, and glacial regions. Therefore, the diversity of nature allows you to experience different ecosystems during a single trek.

Himalayan Experience from Yal Pastures to High Passes

The Gokyo Lakes via Renjo La trip stands out as the best trek in the Everest region because it offers a complete Himalayan experience. The trek combines the perfect balance of adventure, nature, and spirituality. Additionally, the trek allows you to challenge yourself physically and experience the genuine thrill of trekking. From peaceful sections and yal astures to glacial moraines and high-altitude passes, the trek offers everything the Himalayas are known for.

Fewer Trekkers, More Nature

The peaceful and less crowded nature of the Gokyo Lakes via Renjo La is one of the key reasons it’s considered the best trek in the Everest region. Unlike Everest Base Camp, which attracts 30,000–40,000 trekkers per year, the Gokyo Lakes experience about 7.000 yearly, offering a peaceful atmosphere and more favorable walking conditions. Likewise, in a less crowded area, you can enjoy the stunning mountain views, glacial lakes, and stunning landscapes without the noise or distractions.

Does Renjo La Pass make it difficult to trek to Gokyo Lakes?

Yes, Renjo La Pass does make it challenging to trek to Gokyo Lakes. Crossing Renjo La, a steep, high-altitude ascent followed by an equally steep descent, all in a single day, makes it more physically demanding than a typical trek day in the Gokyo Valley. Therefore, the 5,360-meter-high Renjo La Pass is a formidable obstacle on the path to the ultimate reward. The high altitude, where air pressure is roughly half that at sea level, combined with steep elevation and significant gain or loss, makes the pass to Renjo La difficult.

Furthermore, he day you cross the pass is typically the longest walking day of the itinerary, making the long walking hours one of the significant difficulties of the trek. Likewise, the remote and rugged terrain, along with unpredictable weather and snow or icy sections near the top of the pass, make the climb challenging.

Despite the challenges, Renjo La is manageable with the right preparation and mindset. It’s essential to consider the physical demands of the route if you’re planning to reach Gokyo Lakes via Renjo La Pass. Similarly, we recommend engaging in physical training, including cardio exercises and leg-strengthening activities, before the trek. Likewise, ensuring adequate acclimatization days helps to adjust to high altitude.

Is a Gokyo Lakes via Renjo La solo Trek possible?

Yes, a solo trek to Gokyo Lake Renjo La Pass is possible. However, Nepal Tourism Board implemented a rule on 1 April 2023, making it mandatory to hire a licensed guide for most treks in national parks and conservation areas. The Gokyo Valley lies within the Sagarmatha National Park area. But the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality (which controls the Everest region) has largely refused this specific guide requirement for solo trekkers.

While solo trekking offers freedom and a profound connection with nature, it comes with a unique set of challenges and risks. If you slip, fall, or become ill (especially due to altitude sickness), there’s no one to provide immediate first aid, help you descend, or call for help. Similarly, the risk of getting lost, being stuck due to unpredictable weather, and the logistics arrangement make it difficult for solo trekking, especially for first-time trekkers. Therefore, it is always advisable to trek with a group or at least with a guide for a safe trek in the Everest region, including the Gokyo and Renjo La Pass Trek.
