Trek Difficulty
The Upper Dolpo Trek is one of the most challenging treks in Nepal. It won’t be easy to hike above 4000 meters for several days. Crossing the three mountain passes above 5000 meters is one of the most challenging prospects of this trek. The trek to Upper Dolpo will present you with several challenges. Firstly, the Upper Dolpo Trek in Nepal is one of Nepal’s most time-consuming treks. Hiking for about a month is a challenging task. It would be best to be physically and mentally ready for this trek.
Altitude sickness is another primary concern during this trek. The oxygen level above 4000 meters is deficient, and hiking at higher altitudes causes the shortening of breath. There is a high chance that a trekker will suffer from altitude sickness. Acclimatization is necessary for trekkers to adapt their bodies to higher altitudes. Hiking 6-8 hours daily for almost a month will make you feel monotonous. You might mentally get disturbed, so you must have strong willpower for this trek.
The weather in the Himalayas can’t be predicted. It would help if you were prepared for any weather conditions. You should pack your items accordingly since most of your stay will be in a camp. The weather might disturb you even though you camp in a safer place. You may feel discomfort in camps, as it won’t give you the feel of your home or any hotel sleep. These factors might tire you and drain you mentally.
If you’re a first-time trekker, you won’t be familiar with the hiking conditions. The steep ascents and descents will trouble you and make completing this almost a month-long trek difficult. Moreover, Your food options will be limited as you won’t be staying in a hotel where you can have a variety of foods. However, if you’re an experienced trekker, this Upper Dolpa trek may present you with several challenges, but it will give you a surreal trekking experience you will cherish forever.

Additional Trip Information
Things to Experience during Upper Dolpo Trek
Off-Beaten Trek
The Upper Dolpo Trek gives an incredible off-the-beaten-path experience compared to many other overcrowded Nepali trails. This area has impressive geography. The terrains include steep hills, valleys, and crystal clear water lakes, and the isolation of this area makes it unique. As you navigate the uninhabited areas, you will most likely have a silent moment in nature. The limited accessibility means fewer visitors can come, which makes the experience all the more rewarding and lets travelers appreciate the calm of the Himalayas.
Shey Phoksundo
Shey Phoksundo Lake, a natural jewel in the Upper Dolpo region, stands as Nepal’s deepest lake, shimmering with a vivid turquoise hue at 3,738 meters above sea level. Known for its spiritual significance among locals, Shey Phoksundo holds a place in Tibetan Buddhist culture, with ancient legends tied to its serene waters. Trekkers visiting the lake can enjoy quiet reflections on its shores, explore surrounding meadows, or witness the cascading Phoksundo Waterfall. This sacred, untouched beauty is a visual highlight and a serene retreat within the region’s landscape.
Dho Tarap
Dho Tarap is a typical Tibetan settlement on the Upper Dolpo Trek route. Here, people can experience the genuine culture of the area. Located in the beautiful mountain, this active village has a narrow street full of stone-built houses with friendly people. Trekkers can even take local food and do some cultural activities so they’ll learn something more about Tibetan Buddhism. The reason Dho Tarap has cultural significance is that it allows the upper Dolpo trekkers to make some artistic exploration.
Shey Gompa & Other Monasteries
Shey Gompa, located at the base of Crystal Mountain, is a significant spiritual site along the trek. The delicate paintings and religious items typical of this area can be found in this old monastery. There are welcoming monks who often share their monastic life with the guests. Trekkers can also get information about their monastic life from Namgung and Tarap Monastery. These places are suitable for prayer meditation and religious artifacts, reflecting the region’s rich history.
Cultural & Native People
The native people of Upper Dolpo have adapted their lifestyle to thrive in this rugged environment, relying heavily on trade with Tibetan communities. People in these areas have maintained their identity through language and local celebrations by playing traditional music, dancing, and dressing. Subsistence agriculture and animal farming, including yaks and goats, are significant to them. Trekkers will witness a friendly reception and get a chance to get acquainted with the warm-hearted hosts and their exotic culture.
Accommodation Facilities Around Upper Dolpo Trek
During the Upper Dolpo Trek, accommodation options vary from basic lodges and tea houses in lower areas to camping in more remote locations. Lodges typically provide essential facilities, including eating places, bedrooms, and washrooms, except water and hot showers may not always be a feature.
In higher regions, trekkers will often camp with their tents, and cooks and kitchen helpers prepare breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It’s advisable to bring a high-quality sleeping bag rated for cold temperatures and a comfortable sleeping mat for insulation. Lightweight, durable tents for high-altitude conditions ensure safety and comfort throughout the trek.
Food And Water Availability
Food and Water Availability on the Upper Dolpo Trek offers a blend of local and Western cuisine, with options varying by location. In Kathmandu and lower regions, you can enjoy various meals, including breakfasts of eggs, toast, and porridge, as well as lunches and dinners featuring Daal Bhaat, soups, and pasta. Once on the trek, meals become simpler, focusing on high-calorie options like Daal Bhaat, thukpa, and noodles. It’s advisable to bring power bars or energy snacks to help maintain energy levels during long hiking days.
Water Sources and Purification are crucial for the trek, as water is sourced from natural springs, streams, and rivers. To ensure safe drinking water, it’s essential to carry purification tablets, a portable filter, or a UV purifier. Many trekkers find a reusable water bottle with a built-in valuable filter for easy access to purified water while reducing plastic waste. Proper water treatment and hydration are vital to prevent altitude sickness and dehydration in the high-altitude environment of Upper Dolpo.
Communication and WiFi
Communication facilities during the Upper Dolpo Trek are somewhat scarce; however, Ncell or Nepal Telecom SIM cards can be purchased in Kathmandu. These SIM cards offer varying signal coverage, weakening as you go up. Some of the tea houses you find will offer WiFi, but this internet connection is usually prolonged and sometimes unreliable, especially in remote regions. Trekkers should prepare for connectivity issues and consider alternative communication methods, such as satellite phones, for critical communications or emergencies, informing friends or family of potential connectivity challenges.
Upper Dolpo Trek Difficulty Level
The Upper Dolpo Trek is one of the most challenging treks in Nepal. It won’t be easy to hike above 4000 meters for several days. Crossing the three mountain passes above 5000 meters is one of the most challenging prospects of this trek. The trek to Upper Dolpo will present you with several challenges. This trek requires physical and mental readiness due to its long duration—nearly a month of trekking through rugged landscapes.
Altitude sickness is another primary concern during this trek. The oxygen level above 4000 meters is deficient, and hiking at higher altitudes causes the shortening of breath. Acclimatization days are crucial to help the body adjust to the high altitude. Trekkers must also prepare for 6-8 hours of hiking daily, which can become physically exhausting and mentally challenging. You might mentally get disturbed, so you must have strong willpower for this trek.
Also, considering that the weather in the Himalayas is unpredictable – trekkers should expect everything from sunny days to snow and downpours. Trekkers have to spend nights in camps, which can be less comfortable than expected. Simple campsites lack the comforts of hotels, and food options are minimal, which can be particularly challenging for first-time trekkers unused to primary conditions. However, Upper Dolpo is a challenging trek with great scenic beauty and the proper satisfaction that one could find in no other trek.
Acclimatization
For high-altitude trekking, such as in Upper Dolpo, where most treks touch a height of more than 4,000 meters, a period of acclimatization is critical. With each increase in altitude, the atmosphere’s oxygen level is equally low. So, for comfortable acclimatization, the body needs time, and failure to do so can lead to altitude sickness. This can cause life-threatening conditions such as High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE) or High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE). Proper acclimatization helps reduce these risks, thus making the trek safer and more enjoyable when proper acclimatization is done.
To acclimatize correctly, it’s essential to trek at a slow pace, take regular rest days, and follow the principle of “climb high, sleep low.” Hydration, balanced meals, and avoiding alcohol also play critical roles in helping the body adjust. Essential acclimatization stops on the Upper Dolpo Trek include Dho Tarap and Shey Gompa, where trekkers can spend extra time to rest and adapt before tackling higher passes like Jeng La at 4,850 meters. These planned breaks help trekkers acclimatize progressively, reducing the likelihood of altitude sickness and enhancing overall endurance for the journey ahead.
The best time to visit Upper Dolpo Trek
Spring (March to May)
Spring is one of the best times to visit, with temperatures ranging from 10°C to 20°C in the lower regions, though the higher altitudes remain colder. The clear skies and mild weather make it ideal for trekking, and there’s moderate crowd traffic as spring is a popular time to explore. During this season, you’ll be greeted by vibrant landscapes, with rhododendrons in full bloom in the lower regions and clear views of the snow-covered Himalayan range.
Monsoon/Summer (June to August)
Summer is the warmest period in this region. In June, temperatures range from 5°C to 15°C. July is even warmer, with temperatures from 7°C to 18°C. In August, temperatures slightly dip but remain warm, ranging from 7°C to 18°C. Dolpo’s unique location in a rain-shadow region means the area remains accessible and relatively dry despite monsoons elsewhere. Average temperatures stay warm, although the weather in the lower areas can cause occasional flight delays into Juphal. This is a quieter season for trekkers, and the lush green landscapes are a unique feature that summer brings, making the region feel refreshingly alive.
Autumn (September to November)
In September, temperatures range from 5°C to 14°C. October sees a drop to -5°C to 5°C. November continues to cool, with temperatures from -10°C to 0°C. This is the best time for trekking and enjoying mountain views. Autumn is considered the ultimate season for trekking in Upper Dolpo. After the monsoon, the skies are clear and blue, revealing breathtaking views of the Himalayas in all their splendor. Temperatures are mild during the day, though they begin to drop in November, particularly at night. This season sees high foot traffic, as it offers the best weather conditions and many opportunities to observe the locals celebrating the harvest season, adding a cultural richness to the experience.
Winter (December to February)
Winter is the coldest season here. Temperatures range from -15°C to -5°C. January and February are the coldest months, with the same temperature range. Heavy snowfall during these months makes trekking difficult. Especially at higher altitudes, the trails and passes become snow-covered and challenging to travel. As a result, winter is the least popular time for trekking in Upper Dolpo, and most trekkers avoid it due to the harsh conditions. While the winter landscape can be beautiful, the extreme cold and challenging trails make this season suitable only for the most experienced trekkers prepared for winter conditions.
Upper Dolpo Trek route
The Upper Dolpo Trek starts in Dunai, the administrative center of the Dolpa district, accessible by a short drive from Juphal after a scenic flight from Nepalgunj. After leaving Dunai, trekkers go through the region’s outstanding points, including beautiful Phoksundo Lake – the most stunning lake with miraculous turquoise water. The hike goes on to Shey Gompa, a crucial monastic shrine located at the foot of Crystal Mountain, where the visitors have an excellent opportunity to experience the Buddhist culture.
From here, trekkers cover a distance that involves a fantastic trail that passes through main areas like Phoksundo Lake, which is famous for its blue-green water and scenic beauty. It moves to Shey Gompa, a religious center at the feet of Crystal Mountain, where every traveler can explore the devout region of Tibet. Climbing to Jeng La Pass at 4,850 meters will be a thrilling experience as trekkers are rewarded with the sights of Dhaulagiri and Kanjirowa Himal ranges.
The route also passes through Dho Tarap, a traditional Tibetan village, and Tarakot, with some forts and beautiful views. The trek has challenging trials, high altitude, steep slopes, and cross-over high passes.

After lunch, we will rest briefly before continuing toward our final destination.
Upon reaching our final destination, our guides will set up the camps for you to rest. Dinner will be prepared at the camp, and you will have the opportunity to enjoy a meal and relax in preparation for the next day’s hike.
Required Permits for Upper Dolpo Trek
Obtaining the essential permits is crucial for trekkers to explore the Upper Dolpa region. Shey Phoksundo National Park, located in this area, requires a national park permit. Foreign visitors must pay NPR 3000 to enter the park, while those from SAARC countries can obtain a license for NPR 1500. Children below 10 years of age are exempt from these fees. These permits are necessary to explore the national park’s breathtaking landscapes and diverse wildlife.
Additionally, travelers trekking into Upper Dolpo must obtain a special permit. This permit costs USD 500 for ten days, with an additional charge of USD 50 per day for extra days. This permit supports conservation efforts and local communities, allowing trekkers to responsibly experience the unique cultural heritage and stunning views of Upper Dolpo.
Can Beginners take this trek?
Due to steep rocky trails and high altitude, the Upper Dolpo trek is categorized as a strenuous region. It is most appropriate for experienced trekkers. Generally, trekkers spend 6 to 8 hours carrying out their trekking activities. This trek involves areas with no accessible shelter and rugged terrains with unfavorable weather conditions and low altitude pressure. Thus, endurance, acclimatization, and mentality are crucial.
Therefore, the important thing for newcomers is detailed preparation. One of them is to be fit by exercising the cardiovascular section alongside the muscular section. Selecting an excellent trekking company means you will be in good hands. They always ensure that everyone on the trip is safe and provide much-needed assistance so that you can appreciate the unspoiled beauty of the entire Upper Dolpo region and the warm hospitality of its people.

13 Days Manaslu Trek !
My friend and I were lucky to find Tej online before visiting Nepal. We knew we wanted to do a trek, but we weren’t sure exactly which trek. Tej sent us a bunch of itineraries for different treks and we chose the Manaslu circuit. When we arrived our guide, Kumar, was waiting for us at the airport and Tej was able to get us all our permits for the trek done in less than 2 hours which was great. The manaslu trek was absolutely amazing! We were super happy with our whole trip and we were lucky to be able to make the pass even though we saw dozens of other people who had to turn back because of the weather. We are already looking forward to going back next year at the same time to trek Everest and we will definitely use Tej again!

“Nepal Alternative Trek addressed my needs according to my schedule and agenda. I stayed most of the time at his home-stay, shuttling between home and the places that I wanted to visit. Tej, the boss behind Nepal Alternative Trek, helped to make my stay in Kathmandu comfortable and productive. He walked me to the monasteries that I wanted to visit and even picked me up when I needed a ride back home.
The home-stay is hosted by his wife and I got to experience living with a Nepalese family, sharing their food, space and laughter.
For the home-stay:
1) Meals available upon request
2) Family get together and chats
3) Regular change of bed-sheets and towels
4) Free WIFI
5) Near Swayambhu and Thamel
6) Safe environment
7) Mountainous forest behind home
8) Walking distance to beautiful monasteries
9) Away from hustle and bustle of towns yet easy to get to town
I left the home-stay with a smile.
All the best,
Richard

Singapore River, Singapore6 Months Of Preparation For ABC Trekking
Goal was achieved 4130 meter and 0 degree celsius, Annapurna Base Camp Trek. It was 6 months of preparation. It was challenging target for us. We had dense forest, mountain, and completely wilderness above the treeline, it was windy and terrain . There is a huge support team. Without them it would not be possible. We can do it , we just have to give time and practice. Mr. Gurung Ji, you with your entire 7 of team were wonderful. They were always ready to help us.
Thanks Mr. Gurung ji for all the support, and guidance that made the trip successful. While all of us focused on Mountain, big thing but there were so many beautiful things along the way, stream, flowers, flora, so many birds I took pictures. So, in summary, phenomenal, success and our confidence there. We know, we can do more and higher in next what bigger thing.

India8 days non trek city tour and 21days trek to EBC and chola pass
We love nepal and made 3 time visit to this beutiful country and rich culture. This time last year we came with 6 pax and visited Kathmandu , Pohkara and chitwan with a stay of 2 night in each place. We flew to Pohkara and got the van to chitwan and flew to Kathmandu. Tej arranged all transports overland and flights for us. We did not asked for a local guide but it was all smooth and no problem. We are happy with the service provided by Tej and he made all efforts to make us happy. His company performed professional with the very reasonable pricing. We encountered some small problem with the van transporting us back from nagarkot to kathmandu airport. This van was quite small and it came to pick up quite late that we almost missed the flight to pohkara. We told Tej about this and he must take care of this outsourced van company. Anyway the van in pohkara and to chitwan was excellent , big and comfy. So he has corrected the mistake.
Part 2 was our trek to EBC and chola pass for 21 nights. Tej arranged for flight and guide plus porter. For this trekking it was only me and my wife travelling together. We are about 50 years and used the service of 2 porters cause we bought a lot of dry food plus chocolate. We are difficult persons in terms of foreign food. Our guide Ammer and 2 porters are fabulous. They took care of us very well like we are part of their family.
Overall we strongly recommend this company. They are good and not high expensive tag. We will use their service again in June to trek in Langtang. Rocky

Bangkok, ThailandA great experience on the Annapurna Circuit
We had a fantastic experience on the Annapurna Circuit with Nepal Alternative Treks. Tej, the manager, was helpful, professional and efficient in dealing with our requirements and amendments, the arrangements worked smoothly and the information provided to us was excellent. Our guide Kul was brilliant. He was friendly, knowledgable and experienced and took changes in our itinerary in his stride. Our trekking experience was much better with his help in everything from planning the stages of the route to organising our food and accommodation. Just one warning: he is an ace card player and will probably beat you hands down!

UKA wonderful and interesting trek overall
A wonderful & interesting trek overall. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances ( heavy snow fall & Lie ping with a bad cold) we were unable to cross the Ganja la pass. However, our guide Simbir offered us as alternative trek which took us on a difference journey of Nepal. We had the opportunity to visit & stay in many local villages and meet Tamang, Gurung people experience, their lifestyle and culture. We visited our guide’s home town of Chalishgaun and timed it right to join in with Diwali celebrations!

USAA trip worth of a lifetime!
Attempting Everest base camp trekking for me & my group was taking it to the next level. Before this, our limits were Kedarnath, MadMaheshwar & Tunganath with max distances of 18-19 kms spread over 2-3 days. Moreover, these tracks are such that people doesn’t necessarily have to trek. They have the option of ponies. EBC involves a lot for people like us (acclimatization to altitude, strength etc.), but above all, you need someone to provide logistical support, moral support that it can be done. This is where Nepal Alternative Treks does a great job. They organized it very well, guides and porters provided were very reliable and cost is reasonable when you compare to others. They can customize your travel plan according to your need.

IndiaA Trek in Ruby Valley !
A few weeks ago we went on a trip to Nepal, accompanied by a couple of friends who were on their second trip with Nepal Alternative Trek. Our first goal was to trek to the village of Chalish in Ruby Valley. We decided to go with the services of Nepal Alternative Trek to take us up there. We went there partly by jeep, partly walking through the cultivated terraces, meeting the inhabitants of the different communities who worked there.
I must say that the service that Tej offered us was perfect on all lines. First of all, before our departure, months before, Tej always answered our many questions (luggage, temperature, route to be revised, etc.) Always within 24 hours, he answered with a lot of patience.
All the equipment we thought we would need was available at his office.
Our guide Ammar led us to destination with confidence and professionalism. He knew all the trails, and especially all the shortcuts to avoid us having to go up or down too much along our road. He has managed all the difficulties we have encountered: due to personal reasons, we had to change and our itinerary, and our calendar, and he made everything possible. The whole team adapted to our changes. Our guide contacted Tej who orchestrated the changes without us even having to deal with anything.
The porters were attentive and were always in front of our needs.
Our journey continued towards Bandipur with the driver who made us know the various interesting points, from sunrise to sunset, making detours to take us to the most famous places. Then a 2 days stay in Chitwan, and return to Kathmandu again where the driver carried us without calculating from one place to another – God knows that traffic in Kathmandu, Bakhtapur and Patan can be complicated.
Thanks to Tej, and the whole Nepal Alternative Trek team. We will remember forever that amazing experience.
