Classical Manaslu Circuit Trek Overview
The classical Manaslu circuit trek is one of Nepal’s finest off-the-beaten-path adventures. The region is a restricted area due to its ecological importance and proximity to the Tibetan border. The trail encircles Mount Manaslu (8,163 m / 26,781 ft), the 8th-highest mountain in the world, and strolls through the amazing Manaslu Conservation Area. The conservation area is home to exotic flora and fauna, including Himalayan Tahr, Blue Sheep, Langur, Musk Deer, Himalayan Black Bear, and others. Although the chances of spotting them are rare, the elusive Snow Leopard and Red Panda are also present within the conservation area.
Besides the exciting wildlife encounters, the classic route is completed anticlockwise. The trek starts with a drive from Soti Khola, then continues to Machha Khola, passing numerous traditional villages along the way. The counter-clockwise approach is perfect for proper acclimatization and gradual ascent. The route also takes you through subtropical forests, deep river gorges, suspension bridges, alpine landscapes, and glacier views. So, with the mix of green valleys and snowy Himalayan peaks, the experience is diverse.
Upon completion, the trek rewards you with a mesmerizing mountain view. Mount Manaslu, Himalchuli, Ngadi Chuli, Annapurna II, Himlung Himal, Kang Guru, Cheo Himal, and Ganesh Himal are some of the prominent peaks you will see on this trek. Besides the mountain views, when considering the Manaslu Circuit Trek vs. the Annapurna Circuit Trek or Everest Base Camp Trek, the Manaslu trek offers a more remote, less crowded experience.
The classic Manaslu Circuit requires a Restricted Area Permit (RAP), hiring a licensed guide, and traveling with a registered trek company. Unlike other commercial routes, the Manaslu route is simpler, with less infrastructure and limited facilities, adding another layer of remoteness. The circuit is also far from major tourist hubs, requiring longer walking and driving times. Most of the route runs through the Budhi Gandaki River valley, which strongly retains its Tibetan and Gurung cultures. This way, the Manaslu Circuit offers a fresh, peaceful experience, with a mix of natural beauty, high mountain passes, and authentic local culture.
