Most treks’ best season in Nepal, including Everest, Annapurna, and Langtang, is judged almost completely by visibility and temperature. But the Upper Mustang region is different. I’ve walked through the desert terrain of the region in spring, summer, autumn, and winter, and I’ve learned that the best time to visit Mustang isn’t just about clear skies. It’s also about visiting at the right time to experience the rich and lively culture of this ancient Tibetan kingdom.

No doubt, the excellent time for the Upper Mustang Trek is spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). This is because these seasons bring stable weather, clear skies, and comfortable trekking temperatures. However, what makes the Upper Mustang region unique among trekking destinations is its seasonal cultural atmosphere.

Famous festivals like Tiji can turn the ancient walled kingdom of Lo Manthang into a lively cultural hub with masked dances, Buddhist ceremonies, and local celebrations. Apart from Tiji, the region is also known for lesser-known cultural events, such as the Yartung Festival, a unique post-harvest celebration held in Mustang.

Stable weather, clear skies, and ideal trekking conditions are definitely worth considering when choosing the best time for the Upper Mustang Trek. However, the best season for the trek should be understood not only in terms of seasonality and weather, but also in relation to festival and cultural event schedules, as well as traditional experiences. To make it clear when is the best time for trekking and when for experiencing the culture, this blog provides complete seasonal insights, highlights, and travel tips.

Best Time For Upper Mustang Based On Festivals & Events

Upper Mustang, known as the Forbidden Kingdom, is renowned for its centuries-old culture and traditions. As much as the region is famous for its unique landscape, it is also famous for its unique culture and festivals. And some travelers from around the world visit the Upper Mustang to experience its culture and heritage. If you’re among them, the best time to visit Mustang is during the festival season. That said, the region celebrates its two major festivals, and you should mark your visit for either Tiji (May) or Yartung (August/September).

Tiji Festival

Tiji is the festival everyone asks about, and it is the main festival of Upper Mustang. It usually falls in May, though the exact dates change each year according to the Tibetan lunar calendar. The festival takes place in Lo Manthang, the old walled capital of the ancient Kingdom of Mustang, and showcases the valley’s unique culture. Tiji is celebrated every year and lasts for 3 days.

For three days, monks perform masked dances in the monastery courtyard. The dances tell the story of a deity defeating evil forces and restoring balance to the land. The dance is not planned for tourists, but it is significant in the region’s culture.

During Tiji, Lo Manthang becomes crowded with tourists and locals from lower and Upper Mustang. Tea houses fill early. The streets stay busy from morning to evening. If you want peaceful trekking days, this is not the time. But, if you want to see Upper Mustang at its most social and alive, this is the best period.

Yartung Festival

If you want a local celebration without big crowds, the Yartung festival that falls during August to September could be your best time to visit Upper Mustang. Yartung is very different from Tiji. Similarly, it is less famous than Tiji but more fun to watch if you like chaos and color. Instead of monastery dances and large religious gatherings, Yartung is more community-based, centered on horses, racing, drinking, music, and celebration after the farming season.

Yartung is celebrated in several parts of Mustang, particularly around Muktinath, Jomsom, and nearby villages. Horse racing is the main attraction of the festival, along with Lhamo dance (a masked dance that tells the epic story of Tibetan mythology). Riders race through village grounds while locals gather around with food, alcohol, and music. So, the festival also offers a chance to taste local foods like “Tsampa”, barley flour porridge, and “chhyang”(home-brewed barley wine).

If you want cultural interaction without the pressure of a major tourist season, Yartung is often the better choice. Also, if you want something extraordinary from the Mustang or Upper Mustang Tour, August/September is the best time to go on the journey.

Note: Since the dates of the above-mentioned festivals aren’t fixed and change each year, I recommend planning your trip with the help of travel agencies or guides, as they have knowledge of the festivals and when they take place.

Season-by-season Breakdown

After trekking in Upper Mustang through every season several times, I realized that its landscape and overall experience vary with the seasons. I’ve walked the region’s trail when the wind carried dust across the Kali Gandaki valley, when apple orchards around Kagbeni were blooming, and when the desert cliffs glowed under crystal-clear autumn skies. And every season offers a completely different Upper Mustang experience.

Trekker In Upper Mustang

Spring (March to May)

Spring in Upper Mustang feels fresh, without the crowds. It is also one of the best times to trek in Upper Mustang, with ideal weather, pleasant temperatures, blooming apple trees, clear mountain views, and comfortable teahouse conditions. The early months of the season start cold, especially in the mornings around Ghami and Lo Manthang. Tea houses often light yak-dung stoves in dining rooms at night, and you will probably keep your down jacket on during breakfast.

By April and May, the days in Upper Mustang become much more comfortable with pleasant weather. During the season, daytime temperature ranges from 13°C to 22°C and nighttime from -6°C to 5°C. However, the downside of the spring trek in Upper Mustang is the afternoon wind, which can be strong, especially in April and May. By late morning, especially between Chele, Syangboche, and Tsarang, strong valley winds start to build. I remember starting hikes before sunrise just to avoid the dusty gusts that sweep through the valleys after lunch.

Best for: Stable trekking, Tiji Festival, active villages

Autumn (September to November)

If I had to choose one perfect time to visit Upper Mustang, it would probably be October, during the autumn season. It is also the cleanest trekking season in the region. By late September, monsoon clouds clear out, the air becomes dry, and visibility is clear across the entire region. This is the time when you get the clearest views across the Upper Mustang Valley, including Mount Nilgiri and Dhaulagiri.

Temperatures in autumn are stable, with daytime temperatures ranging from 12°C to 20°C and nighttime temperatures between -8°C and -2°C. However, nights get colder by November, especially in higher villages. Visiting Mustang during this time also allows trekkers to witness harvest activities in local villages. You see locals drying crops, herding animals, and preparing for winter, which gives the trek a much richer cultural experience.

Still, the downside of the autumn trek is that it is peak trekking season, making lodges and trek routes crowded, especially around Jomsom and Lo Manthang. Also, prices for flights and accommodations may also rise slightly.

Best for: Clear mountain views and clean landscape

Winter (December to February)

The Upper Mustang trek in winter is challenging because it is the coldest time in the region. I still remember icy winds cutting through the alleys of Lo Manthang at dawn while the entire kingdom sat silent under pale winter light. No doubt, snow covering the region’s landscape creates stunning sights during the season, but trekking is harder at this time of year due to harsh weather conditions.

During winter in Upper Mustang, temperatures regularly drop well below freezing, especially at night. The daytime temperature in the Upper Mustang ranges from -5°C to 8°C and nighttime -10°C to -25°C. Due to extreme cold in the upper sections, many locals leave Upper Mustang and move to the lower areas. Thus, some teahouses close, and nighttime temperatures become extremely cold, making finding accommodation difficult during this time.

Another challenge during the Upper Mustang trek is blocked mountain passes, including Nyi La, Ghemi La, and Lo La. In addition, flights to Jomsom become less reliable because of winter weather and wind conditions.

Best for: Highly experienced trekkers seeking winter adventure

Summer (June to August)

This surprises many trekkers because Mustang in summer remains suitable for trekking despite the monsoon season. That is because the region lies inside the Himalayan rain shadow. The area receives minimal rainfall, with low annual rainfall (250-300 mm). While many trekking areas in Nepal receive heavy rain from June to August, Upper Mustang remains suitable for trekking. The season is also the warmest one, with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 25°C in daytime and 5°C to 12°C at night.

The main challenge during this season is usually not the trek itself. However, rainfall in other parts of Nepal affects the journey to the trek. Flights between Pokhara and Jomsom are the common way to begin the trek, but since Pokhara receives heavy rainfall from June to August, the flights are highly dependent on weather conditions. I have seen trekkers lose two full days in Pokhara waiting for weather clearance. So, if you are travelling to Upper Mustang in the summer/monsoon season, keep extra buffer days before your international flight home.

Road travel can also become difficult during heavy rain. Landslides and rough road conditions slow down jeep drives, especially in the lower hill areas before reaching Mustang. However, late August often brings the Yartung Festival, especially around Muktinath and Jomsom, so if you get there during that time, it will feel like the cherry on top.

Upper Mustang Trek Cost Variation by Season

If you’re budgeting for the Upper Mustang Trek, understanding seasonal cost variations is essential. The price you pay in May can differ significantly from what you’d spend in August or December, depending on the days you spend, accommodation availability, flight reliability, food costs, and festival season.

Restricted Area Permit (RAP) Costs

The restricted area permit (RAP) cost is fixed by the government and does not change by season. However, what does change is the number of days you need to pay for due to weather delays. The permit costs USD 500 per person for the first 10 days, then USD 50 per additional day.

Season DurationTotal RAP costConditions
Peak (Spring and Autumn)10-12USD 500-600No delays and flight cancellations

Winter 10-12USD 500-600Road blockage at some sections

Note: Some agencies include RAP in the package, and some list it separately. Always confirm.

Flight Costs (Pokhara – Jomsom – Pokhara)

Jomsom serves as the gateway to Upper Mustang and marks the starting point of the trek. There are two main ways to reach Jomsom: by ground transportation and by air. The cost of ground transportation is generally stable, but air travel is highly seasonal. If you choose to fly to Jomsom, expect different costs depending on the time of year.

Winter USD 140-170USD 280-340Very limited flights; fog and snow cause cancellations, and last-minute booking costly

Accommodation and Food Costs

The cost of food and accommodation in Upper Mustang, including other trekking destinations of Nepal, fluctuates with tourist inflow and supply logistics.
