Poon Hill Trek is an easy and beginner-friendly trek in the Annapurna region of Nepal. It is one of the most popular easy treks and is perfect for anyone who wants to see the beautiful Himalayan peaks and the sunrise view in a few days. It takes 4 days to complete the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek, starting and ending at Pokhara. The reward of the trek is clear views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges.
The first few days can be a little hard because the trail goes steeply uphill and the altitude slowly increases. The climb from Tikhedhunga to Ulleri has about 3,000 stone steps, which can be tough for beginners. But with slow walking, proper rest, and hydration, the trek can be done without much problem.
For those who have trekked before, the route feels simple, while new trekkers may find it a bit difficult. Overall, it is a safe and enjoyable journey that gives amazing mountain views and is a great start for longer treks like Ghorepani to Annapurna Base Camp and other longer treks as well.
There are several factors that determine the difficulty of the Poon Hill Trek. Let’s discuss a few major ones in brief:

You can start your Poon Hill trek journey either from Pokhara or Kathmandu. The actual trekking route begins at Hile and ends at Ghandruk. From Hile, the trek to Ghorepani Poon Hill is 23 km.
The trekking trail moves up and down through forest paths and many stone steps. Some areas are steep and can be difficult, especially for first-time trekkers. Along the way, trekkers pass through rhododendron forests and scenic viewpoints.

We decided to do this trek without a porter — and wow, it was tough at times. We are so grateful for our guide, Laxman, who continuously encouraged us, carried snacks for us, and was always a smiling face when we were tired. We’re heading home with incredible photos and invaluable memories. A big thank you to our guide, Laxman, and to Nepal Alternative Treks.

Poon Hill Viewpoint lies at 3,210 m above sea level, which is the highest point of the trek. The chance of altitude sickness is low, but some trekkers may experience mild symptoms of altitude sickness at high altitudes above 2500 m.
This condition is called Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) and can include headache, nausea, dizziness, or shortness of breath. To reduce such symptoms, you can walk slowly, stay hydrated, and rest properly. As you steep upward, the level of oxygen starts decreasing, and your body may feel uncomfortable.
| Altitude (meters) | Possible Symptoms | Precaution |
| 1,500 m – 2,000 m | Rare | Stay hydrated, normal trekking pace |
| 2,000 m – 2,800 m | Mild headache, slight fatigue | Take breaks, walk slowly |
| 2,800 m – 3,210 m | Headache, nausea, dizziness, shortness of breath | Rest properly, hydrate, and avoid overexertion |
| 3,210 m (Poon Hill) | Mild AMS(Acute Mountain Sickness) possible | Walk slowly, rest often, enjoy views safely |
During the peak season, teahouses can become crowded, and solo trekkers may have trouble finding a room. It is best to book in advance if you are trekking during busy months. Some popular stops like Ghorepani and Poon Hill get fully booked quickly, so early planning is important.
Teahouse accommodation usually has a simple twin-sharing bed and meals like dal bhat, noodles, or soup. Most teahouses also have basic toilets and warm drinks. The facilities are simple but enough to rest, eat, and enjoy while experiencing the mountain lifestyle.
In villages like Ulleri, Ghorepani, and Tadapani, you can stay in teahouses and enjoy homemade meals made with local ingredients. In the evenings, trekkers often gather around the fireplace to share stories and relax. The warm hospitality and simple village life make the stay as memorable as the trek itself.
