Challenges and Risks at Thorong La
Thorong La Pass during the Annapurna Circuit makes the journey challenging with various risks. As Thorong La lies at a higher elevation, it’s important to understand the potential challenges and risks the section comes with. Preparing for the difficulties during ACT helps you manage your expectations, stay safe, and enjoy the journey more.
Here are the challenges and risks trekkers experience during their Thorong La Pass Trek on the Annapurna Circuit:
Altitude sickness at 5,416 m (17,769 ft)
One of the primary challenges trekkers face while on the journey to Thorong La Pass on the Annapurna Circuit Trek is high altitude. Not in the lower region, but as you get higher on your trip, the risk of altitude sickness increases. Above an elevation of 3,000 m, you’ll experience symptoms of altitude sickness, including headache, nausea, dizziness, and shortness of breath, due to the thinning air.
To reduce the risk of altitude sickness, spending time in a major location like Manang before ascending to high elevation for proper acclimatization is necessary. The acclimatization day helps your body adjust to the altitude, reducing the risk of altitude sickness.
Similarly, without letting your body adjust to changed temperature, your body feels serious difficulties like high-altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE) or cerebral edema (HACE). Thus, if you acclimate to the altitude at Manang or a location below Thorong La, it would be easier for you to tackle the Pass’s challenge.
Weather at Thorong Pass
Another risk trekkers experience on the Annapurna Circuit Trek via Thorong La Pass is unpredictable weather. The weather, especially near and on Thorong La, is unpredictable and changes unexpectedly. To avoid such challenges, trek during March to May and September to November. The time offers the most stable weather and clear skies, which makes crossing Thorong La more comfortable.

This was our fourth trek with the company. We went to the Annapurna circuit along with Tilicho lake. It’s a very nice but challenging trek. It takes one through sub tropical forests to the high Alpine areas. Crossing Thorong la (5416 m) forms the pinnacle. After that, the ruggged mukti nath area of Mustang. Amazing experience.

Physical and Mental Challenge of ACT
Surpassing Thorong La is not easy, as it demands both physical and mental challenge. It takes around 8-10 hours to hike to the Pass and descend to Muktinath, which can be exhausting. Thus, the trek requires both stamina and a positive mental attitude.
All in all, the challenges of Thorong La are real, but with the proper preparation, it is an unforgettable, achievable goal. By being aware of symptoms of altitude sickness, knowing the best times to trek, and preparing physically and mentally for ACT, you can have a safe and successful journey. Moreover, with proper pacing, hydration, acclimatization, and layering, Thorong will be a life-changing experience.
When is the Best Time to Cross Thorong La Pass?
The ideal time to cross Thorong La Pass is during the Autumn and Spring seasons. Autumn, from September to November, is arguably the best time for conquering any challenging trek, including Thorong La Pass. During this time, the weather is at its most stable condition, and the pass is generally free of heavy snow, which makes crossing safer.
While the lower elevation faces relatively pleasant temperatures, at higher altitudes like Thorong La, temperatures can drop significantly, ranging from -8°C to 5°C. Likewise, the trekking routes during autumn are dry and in excellent condition, which reduces the risk of slips and falls. Moreover, the good condition of the route makes for a more comfortable walking experience around Thorong La.
Furthermore, spring from March to May is the second-best season to attempt the Thorong La Pass. The weather is generally stable, with clear, sunny days, during the season, with daytime temperatures at higher elevations ranging from 0°C to 10°C. Still, the melting snow in spring can make the higher parts of the route, including the Thorong pass, a bit icy in some spots.
Besides, the summer/monsoon season, which spans from June to August, brings heavy rain that makes trails muddy and slippery, and clouds and fog cover the area near the pass. In addition, winter (December to February) brings the coldest period, covering the pass in deep snow. Also, due to heavy snowfall, the Thorong La Pass is closed during this time.
