This section introduces trekkers to lush rhododendron forests, traditional villages, and stone-paved trails, while gradually ascending to Ghorepani (2,850m), a key stop before Poon Hill’s iconic sunrise views. Trek Starts from Tikhedhunga

The trek from Tikhedhunga (1,480) marks the beginning of the Ghorepani-Poon Hill and Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) routes. The total distance to Ghorepani is about 10-12 km, taking 5-7 hours, depending on fitness levels. The trail initially follows the Modi Khola valley, crossing suspension bridges before ascending steep stone steps. Key villages along the way include Ulleri and Banthanti, offering rest stops with teahouses and stunning mountain views. This route eventually merges with the ABC trail at Ghorepani, making it a strategic starting point for longer treks.

Ulleri – The Steep Stone Steps Village

While the 3,300+ stone steps to Ulleri are legendary, this section also offers cultural charm and natural beauty. The trail begins with a suspension bridge over the Bhurungdi Khola, leading into a mix of terraced farms and waterfalls. As you climb, you’ll pass small tea shops and local homes, where friendly Gurung villagers often greet trekkers. The steps are tough, but the surrounding lush forests and glimpses of Annapurna South keep motivation high.

Best Pacing Strategy for This Climb

  • Start Early: Begin by 7-8 AM to avoid midday heat and crowds.
  • Slow & Steady: Maintain a consistent, moderate pace—rushing leads to exhaustion.
  • Use Trekking Poles: Helps reduce knee strain and improves balance on uneven steps.
  • Short Breaks: Pause every 20-30 minutes (or whenever needed) to catch your breath.
  • Hydrate & Snack: Drink water frequently and eat light energy snacks (nuts, chocolate, or bananas) to maintain stamina.

Rest Points and Water Stations

  • Lower Ulleri (1,900m): A small tea shop about halfway up offers a shaded resting spot with drinks.
  • Mid-Section Landings: Occasional flat sections between staircases allow quick breaks.
  • Upper Ulleri (2,080m): The village has multiple lodges (e.g., Himalayan View Lodge) where trekkers can refill water, enjoy hot tea, or even stay overnight if needed.
  • Natural Water Sources: A few streams along the trail (filter or treat before drinking).

Pro Tip: If the steps feel too strenuous, consider splitting the trek—stay overnight in Ulleri and continue to Ghorepani the next day for better acclimatization.

Final Destination: Ghorepani – Gateway to Poon Hill & ABC

After hiking for 5-7 hours, you’ll reach Ghorepani (2,850m), a lively village with warm teahouses and friendly trekkers. This is where you’ll stay before the famous Poon Hill sunrise hike—a short 1-hour climb to see breathtaking 360° views of Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, and Machhapuchhre peaks.

Ghorepani is also an important crossroads for treks. If you’re going to Annapurna Base Camp (ABC), your next stop is Tadapani. For the Annapurna Circuit, you’ll head toward Tatopani. With clear trails and plenty of food and lodging options, Ghorepani is the perfect place to rest before your next adventure!
