Trek Difficulty

Many experienced trekkers might consider the Annapurna Base Camp Trek an easy experience. However, don’t get it twisted. It is not a walk in the park, as the trek experience reduces its difficulty. You have to travel long distances for several hours. Furthermore, you’ll have to climb over 4130m, increasing the chances of altitude sickness.

Hence, different factors increase the difficulty of the trek. If you are an experienced trekker, these factors might affect you less than new trekkers. So, let’s examine some of the factors that increase trek difficulty.

Distance and Duration

To reach Annapurna Base Camp, you must cover the distance of 110 km. The itinerary of the ABC trek usually lasts from 14 to 16 days. You must walk for at least 8-9 hours daily to complete the trek duration within a certain itinerary days. You’ll have more opportunities to rest if you choose a longer trek. This means you’ll only need to trek a short distance each day.

However, you can’t waste time if you are trekking for a short duration, like 8-9 days. This leads to few acclimatization days and long trekking hours daily, making you tired. If you are not used to walking long distances, you might feel exhausted and uncomfortable during the trek. Taking breaks, staying hydrated, and listening to your body is essential. Remember that it is okay to take it slow and steady.

To avoid fatigue, it is recommended that you follow a physical fitness routine before the trek. This will help prepare your body for the physical demands of the journey.

Altitude Sickness

The high altitude is another major factor that increases or affects the difficulty of the Annapurna base Camp Trek. You will have to trek most of your trek above an altitude of over 4000m, facing harsh climates, cold weather, and the risk of altitude sickness. Altitude sickness is among the most dangerous and fearful factors that affect trekkers and mountain climbers at high altitudes.

When you trek over an altitude of over 3000m, you are at a high risk of altitude sickness. Symptoms include vomiting, nausea, fever, headache, dizziness, shortness of breath, and difficulty walking. There are a few more severe types of altitude sickness, like HAPE and HACE.

There are a few ways to prevent altitude sickness and they are;

Acclimatize Properly

There are a few ways to prevent altitude sickness, including acclimatization. Acclimatization is getting used to the climate, weather, and altitude, essential during your trek in the Annapurna region. As you climb the altitude, you will feel less air pressure and oxygen level, which makes it difficult to breathe and travel quickly.

Hence, it is essential to properly acclimatize to the weather, climate, and air pressure in the Annapurna region. During your acclimatization, you can either rest for an entire day or hike to a higher altitude and then return to sleep at a lower altitude.

Gradual ascent and descent

To avoid altitude sickness during your trek, ascend and descend the elevation gradually. This helps your body adjust to the region’s weather and temperature.

Rushing to higher altitudes can increase your risk of experiencing altitude sickness. Any new trekker heading towards the Annapurna region must know the basics of gradually ascending and descending to reduce the risk of illness.

Medication

Another way of preparing for altitude sickness is by preparing for the cure. If you can’t prevent acute mountain sickness, you should have a cure by buying all the necessary medication. First, you must be prepared for first aid and have medicine like Diamax to reduce symptoms. These medicines may not completely cure your sickness, but they will give you the power and time to lower your altitude, which will help you recover instantly.

Food and Accommodation in Annapurna Base Camp Trek

When traveling to ABC camp in the autumn season, like October, it is important to consider food and accommodation services. However, you don’t have to worry about food and accommodation services while trekking in Annapurna during October.

Regarding food, you will get to eat different varieties during your ABC trek. You’ll have meals three times daily for the entire itinerary: breakfast, lunch, and dinner. You can choose from local Nepali cuisines like Dal, Bhat, and Vegetable curry to Western delicacies like Pizzas, Burgers, Momos, soups, Stews, and Steaks during these meals.

We recommend you avoid eating meat during your trek in high altitudes, as it might not be hygienic. You’ll have some options, like tea, coffee, energy drinks, hot water, etc. We also recommend you avoid drinking alcohol, as it is the root cause of dehydration, which can also cause altitude sickness.

During the peak season, there will be many hotels, lodges, and tea houses for trekkers and tourists arriving in Kathmandu. Since it is the best time of the year to trek Annapurna Sanctuary in Nepal, there is a high chance of trails, tea houses, and lodges becoming overcrowded.

You will first arrive in Kathmandu, where there are plenty of options during your trek. Three- to Five-star hotels are more expensive but have several services. However, as you reach a secluded or remote area, you will most likely find tea houses.

During the peak season, you cannot get preferred accommodation services, so book early. Furthermore, since the tea houses or lodges are booked early, you will not get a single room. Hence, you will get a small but cozy room with a twin bed, so you must share it with other trekkers.

These teahouses provide warm pillows, blankets, bedsheets, and mattresses. You must share your room with other trekkers, a bathroom, and a sink. You must pay an additional amount if you want services like hot showers.
