Where to start

Before you trek in this region, make sure to plan out the proper itinerary. Spring and Autumn are the best times to trek in this region; during these seasons, you can witness the best views of Langtang. The trek starts at Shivapuri National Park and ends at Thimbu. It takes four days of hiking to go from Sundarijal to Helambu. Once you descend from Helambu Valley, your trek will lead you towards Thimbu, marking the end of the hike. From Thimbu, you’ll drive back to Kathmandu.

Permit and Documentation


The Trekkers Information System (TIMS) card is mandatory for foreigners to trek in Nepal. The TIMS card is compulsory on every trekking trail except for the Everest Base Camp Trek. You can get the TIMS card from the TIMS check post, Nepal Tourism Board, or any Trekking Agencies in Nepal. The TIMS card is of two colors: Green and Blue. The Green card grants a permit to non-restricted areas, whereas the Blue card grants a license to restricted areas. It costs around 20 USD. 

Langtang National Park Permit

Since the Helambu region lies within Langtang National Park, everyone visiting there should get an entry permit to Langtang National Park. It costs NPR 3000 for foreigners and half for visitors from SAARC nations.

Shivapuri National Park Permit

The Helambu trek itinerary begins from Sundarijal, the entrance point to Shivapuri National Park. You need an entry permit for Shivapuri National Park. An entry permit costs NRS 1000 per day to foreigners and NRS 600 for the people of the SAARC nation.
